CollyMP's Journal, 11 March 2013

Does anyone know if there's a way on FS to enter a recipe and get the nutrition information? Or even another website? I do mostly from scratch cooking, and most of the time I just find something similar and guesstimate, and it works most of the time. However-some things I know I make in a more healthy manner than similar restaurant or prepared meals that are on the database. Tonight is Mu Shu chicken in the crock pot-it's got boneless skinless chicken thighs and a big breast, as my guys believe that they only like white meat, hoisin sauce, soy sauce, onions, etc. Not much fat in it, and I use low sodium soy sauce. Being able to calculate the calories in servings as I prepare the food would be very helpful.

At the moment, however, I must go clean my kitchen! LOL-I made fried rice for the child for lunch while I was browning the chicken for the crock pot, and there are things everywhere!

Diet Calendar Entry for 11 March 2013:

I start by adding it as a 'meal' - it's a bit of an effort but early on it helped me break down each component to understand the overall nutrition. So enter each ingredient as a part of the meal - you may have to go so far back as to enter the ingredient if it's not in the diary. Once everything is totaled - decide how many servings you can get out of the meal to get an individual. Like, I used to make a huge pot of soup every sunday so I'd enter all of the chicken, each veg, etc., then decide 'ok, 12 cups' so the full pot of soup was 12 servings and if I had one cup I entered as 1/12 of a serving. As I said - laborious but kept me busy entering food into the diary instead of entering it into my mouth :0-)

And that IS the goal, isn't it? Now that I think about it, I believe either my computer or the spousal units computer has a program that lets you enter recipes and then gives you the nutrition info. I KNOW I've had it at one time or another. Barring that, I'll do exactly as you suggest-thanks Bella!

You're welcome - you can save it if it's a dish you're going to make repeatedly and you can keep it private or open it up to the forum as you please. And you can delete it later w/o affecting your historical diary. Some people criticize this site-I find it very easy and intuitive.

Well it is often human nature to criticize that which does not do everything for us or meet each individual and specific need-I've encountered this many times myself in various venues. I think anyone that really thinks it's going to be difficult to use is going to make it difficult for themselves.

Oh lawrd-I remember when we had a business (and it wasn't a full time, it was just a little sideline small time thing)-the taxes that year made my head swim!
