ctlss's Journal, 10 August 2012

Well, it is a wonderful 78 degrees here at 11:30 in the morning, which means there are outside chores to be done. The cooler weather has finally gotten the 'maters to start ripening. They are soooo delicious and there are going to be scads of them. I have been picking for a couple of days now. As promised, here are some pictures:

Some of them are quite nice sized...

As are the zucchini...

Now if the watermelon and honeydew would just hurry it up!

In other news, I was able to find a replacement seat for my car. It was in a salvage yard about 2 hours from here, but they are shipping it, so don't have to drive out and get it. The only problem is that it is maroon...I will either dye it or use some seat covers.

Food yesterday was good. We went to town, ran into Wally World, and filled the gas cans.

Today we are bleaching and power washing the deck, getting it ready for re-sealing. There are some boards that are going to need replacing, so I will have to do that before staining, but for now the power washing is the big thing. I'll be sealing with TWP, which lasts such a nice long time and really revitalizes the wood. Of course, there will be before and after photos, but it will be a while. This project won't be done until the end of fall.

The parts for my carpet shampooer came today, so I am going to rebuild that this evening and then try it out in my bedroom! YAY...whose brilliant idea was white carpet in there anyway??? ;)

Mom's chair lift for the stairs has quit working, and I was not able to help baby sis fix it long distance, so I did some calling this morning. There is a tech line, and I am hoping when brother goes there this evening he will be able to get it up and running again. Otherwise, I will take a look on Sunday. If we can't fix it there is a fella that does the repair not to far from mom's and I will call him.

Other than that, it is pretty much status quo around here.

I guess that's all the news that's fit to print from my corner...hope all is well in your's!

Grateful I am...

1. ...for this much cooler weather.

2. ...for tomatoes that are finally ripening, and bursting with yummy goodness.

3. ...for a replacement seat for baby.

The tomatoes are beautiful. Don't know if ours will ripen or just burn. First the weather was cooler than normal and now it is bloody hot. We are getting lots of peppers which are delicious. Glad you got a new seat for the car.

Love your tomatoes - heirloom varieties? That is what I am going for next year. As for your carpet - I live in red clay country so anything installed in my house must be colored to blend nicely with the stuff!

Karen, it was so hot here that the tomatoes just wouldn't ripen. I did some research and it would appear that when it gets too hot they stop producing lycopene which is what makes them turn red. They really like it to be in the upper 80's for the best ripening. However, they did continue to get bigger and bigger, so at least the ones that are ripening now are huge! Hope your weather cools off just a tad and yours start to ripen. Have a great weekend!

Pam, that garden has just gone gazonkas. Not sure why, but it sure has been producing. Have a wonderful weekend!

Super awesome produce! mine are about 2 weeks out, the heat really slowed the whole thing down. Just hope we don't have an early frost!

Buffy, they are heirloom beefsteaks that I bought from the school greenhouse. The FFA/AG kids grow them and then sell them. I am really pleased with them, so think I will continue to use them. As for the carpet, the majority of the house is hard wood and tile, but our bedroom is white carpet. I think I must have been crazy when I picked it out! lol Have a great weekend!

Me too, Sazy! Thanks!

Thanks, HCB...I am really excited about the yield. My dad taught me everything I know! :)

Bren, go for it! I did a much smaller one and it was just the right size for us. 4 cucumber vines, 2 zucchini plants, 8 pepper plants, 12 tomatoes, 1 hill of honeydew and 1 hill of watermelon, 8 kale...perfect! As for the seat, it's just a single bolt that holds it in. I didn't get to the carpet shampooer, but there is always tomorrow, or Monday, or Tuesday, or...lol We have hardwood and tile through the main areas, but carpet in the bedrooms. Ours is white and, of course, it is where the doggies love to be the most! lol Have a great weekend my sweet friend! Love you!

Lizzy, it has been the strangest year...first the late freeze at the end of May, then turned off hot the end of June and stayed that way for weeks on end. It is amazing that we have anything growing at all. Good luck with your 'maters...hope you have tons of them! Have a wonderful weekend!

We are so worried about another repeat, green tomatoes rotting come fall. Glad to see your harvest.

Heidi, it has just been a very odd year for the tomatoes this year. I am glad that some are finally ripening, as I was worried about the same. Of course, there are always fried green tomatoes! ;)
