Hermiones Mom's Journal, 11 November 2016

I am so happy my weight has stayed stable the past 10 days. The holiday season of celebrations has started early in my corner of the world. My sister is here for 10 days, and my dear friends who moved to Iowa cam over the weekend. So we're having all kinds of family gatherings that involve food. So I'm working very hard at making sure that any time I am not partying I am sticking close to my plan so as to balance things out and not gain. So far, I've had only one bad IBS day, and I knew it was coming. We went out for a big brunch on Sunday, and for entree food, I ate pretty much only proteins -- mostly fish and shellfish pretty much unadorned. My idea was that if I was careful up until desert, then I could just eat anything I wanted for desert. Even at desert, I didnt eat anything with whipped cream or ice cream, but I did eat baked goods with wheat and dairy, and sure enough, by 48 hours later, I had a terrible day. But just one day, which is pretty good for me. And I didn't have to take any medicine to stop it: I went back to my plan, ate some oatmeal, and my system is turning around again. If I can do this occasionally and not have long-term ill effects, I am Ok with that. Hooray. Ok with me. What an important change.

So happy for you HM!! It's hard around times of celebrations and festivities ... and great food! Well done (except for the one time ... but, yum!)

It's kind of like a limited bank account, isn't it? You have to decide where to allocate the 'funds' for maximum impact and the occasional splurge. I'm glad to hear that the impact of the wheat and dairy were controllable. It might mean that you're healing.

Erikahollister -- baked goods made with wheat and dairy give me horrible diarrhea, and also I get odd asthma-like symptoms from eating wheat. I actually thought for a while that I needed to ask the doctor to run an ekg, because I thought I was having heart palpitations. But after I stopped eating wheat, the chest symptoms went away. So in addition to the fact that I have IBS secondary to a food-borne infection, it's likely I have some kind of mild allergy to wheat. I am planning to try some barley in the next couple of weeks to see if I can deal with it. Before I got the infection and IBS, I was regularly eating hulled barley as my starch, but because it's listed as not FODMAP safe, I gave it up. Since you are not supposed to have to do the FODMAP elimination diet permanently, I'd like to start adding in foods. I can eat onions and garlic, which are supposed to be very bad for FODMAP, so I think I can add other foods as well. However, it's clear that wheat and non-lactose-free dairy are not possibilities for the present.

Have you been tested for gluten antigens? or Celiac?
11 Nov 16 by member: erikahollister
I don't eat gluten anymore because it caused black moods. Feeling suicidal after a cup cake? Definitely not worth it! Never had that problem since giving it up. They did a genetic test and I came up with all the markers for celiac. I suffered mood swings and depression my whole life, til I figured it out (on my own) then got it confirmed. What a relief. A lot of people just can't eat it. The IBS might be a clue for you.

I'm not celiac. I did not have these problems until after I contracted a food-borne infection at Chipotle in June 2014. I was sick for weeks and convinced myself I had developed colon cancer, but when I finally went to the gastroenterologist, he diagnosed the IBS-A and explained that this is often the result of food-borne infections. I have since had a colonoscopy that showed such good health that the doctor said: See you in 10 years. So my colon tests out normal, but if I eat high-FODMAP foods, I get really sick. Apparently, this is not that unusual. But it's been scary and upsetting to me. Thanks for asking.

Congrats on staying stable; it's hard when you've got people visiting.

I'm glad that you don't have to see the gastrologist for 10 years that's wonderful news. I also suffer from IBS but I've never heard of IBS type A. And congratulations on staying the same weight the last 10 days.

It's great that you discovered the FODMP protocol and that it works for you.

Jones Jennifer -- IBS-A is the most mystifying to everyone because it means "alternating" -- in this case between diarrhea and constipation. I have diarrhea when I eat non-FODMAP-safe foods to which I am sensitive, such as non-lactose-free dairy, wheat, beans, and broccoli. But sometimes when I'm totally faithful to my diet, I get terribly constipated. I try to solve my problems with diet, so that I don't have to depend on medications, and generally I do pretty well.

Thank you for answering my question about IBS-A as I can completely relate, luckily, you know your trigger foods.
