My mom is a stubborn little thing. I told her we were coming over for a quick visit to help her sister figure out her shipping and luggage for her temporary move to Japan, but when we arrived, they had cooked another feast. To leave when they've gone to that much trouble would have been rude. So we ate. All of it, except for a half-cup of white rice, was relatively healthy fare. Sashimi (raw tuna aka maguro) and hamachi kama (broiled yellowtail cheeks, so delicious), tamago (cooked egg formed into slices like you put on the top of nigiri sushi), roasted Japanese eggplant and bell peppers, pimiento cheese on celery (not exactly traditional, but delish), and miso soup. My aunt makes the best soup. It has a lot more tofu and odd bits in it than the broth they serve at most Japanese restaurants. I wish there would be enough time for me to get cooking lessons with those two before my aunt leaves next month. It's interesting how these two sisters have lived on opposite sides of the US for the last 50 years and adapted their own cooking traditions to what's available. My aunt being a California resident, up to now, had access to a lot more Asian food staples than my Mom here in Alabama. Mom had to pick up the Southern fried-food tradition from her mother-in-law, my precious grandmother.
So we came home from lunch there overstuffed and sleepy. I think there was MSG in the soup, so Mr Coco had a terrible headache the rest of the day and I took a 2-hr nap yesterday afternoon, which is very unusual for me.
Then instead of eating supper last night, we went out for frozen yogurt since it's next door to Whole Foods. It was packed, so I think everyone is finally feeling spring is in the air. Hope it lasts!
