A nice relaxing day yesterday. I did give the frig a much needed clean out. Still need to organize the freezer in that frig. It has things falling on my toes. 13,202 steps as I did do a lot of walking.

Planning some for meals for the coming week. Realized last night when I went to start some garbanzo beans and could not find them or maybe I simply don't have any that as I get my kitchen re-do done I need to set up some sort of inventory for staples. Ran up to the corner store and was glad they had a few bags of garbanzos.

Was thinking the gym today but looking at the upcoming week my gym plans will fit best Mon, Wed and Friday, so I do not want to strength train 2 days in a row, body rebels on that. Will do other things today, hopefully turn over that raised bed. That's a workout in itself. Take the pup for a walk again, she really liked it and good for me.

A morning run to Sprouts for supplies for the week, a stop for some seeds incase I can get the bed turned and plantable, also fenced as my pup thinks I made that one just for him. No freezing days in the coming week in the forecast. Get a head start on some cool weather greens.

I LOVE SPRING!!!

Good morning WFN ... I am also feeling the Spring!!! Unlike you I am surrounded by mounds of snow so it's hard to really get into it. However, I hope a lot of the snow will melt this week - it is supposed to continue the above freezing trend with sunshine. Have a wonderful and productive day!

YAY! glad to hear you will have a break. Maybe the old in with a lion out like a lamb saying for March will hold true. So many of you have been buried in snow for most of the winter. Enjoy your warmer and sunshine.

If you have a dehydrator. Try drying cantaloupe it is yummy!! Ha a half of one in the freezer that needed to be used. I had an empty rack, the rest full of strawberries and papaya, so sliced it, just tried it. Yum!!

Getting onion sets this week. Really want to plant broc, cauli, brus spts. and garlic. Might do a few head of cabbage too. The norm are green beans, limas, zucchini, squash, tomatoes tomatoes tomatoes. And either cantaloupe or watermelon. Big garden planned this year. Hope to can tomatoes so need to have the onions and garlic going.

WFN: I need to get a dehydrator. I have though about it but never acted on it - maybe this will be the year!

We're also still snowbound, but the temps will rise today & tomorrow. I'm certain my spring bulbs have already sprouted and are growing beneath the snow. Listening to the "icebergs" sliding off the roof as the sun gets strong enough to melt them. I'm going to try some raised beds this year. Current beds are awkward to fence & the critters get more of my veggies than I do! :)

Home grown cabbage is the best! I had small, but tasty cabbages last year! Good luck!

You guys have me all excited for gardening now. It's still so darn cold out! Our snow is melting but we have pools of standing water that freezes over during the night. It's going to warmer next week. I am sooo excited. I don't start working for another week. WFN, I bought that cookbook you have been raving about. I am getting excited as the celebrity chefs have been raving about it in the books reviews. I am getting the 10th Anniversary updated one ... hardback, too. Not putting this one in my kindle.

Came home from Sprouts and also from buying some seeds ready to dig in the dirt. Am digging up chunks of dirt ice cubes!! Maybe in a couple days it will be thawed, all this zero degree weather has frozen the soil a ways down. Good though as the bugs should be less this year. I will go hunting in a minute and see if I can find a place I can dig up enough to at least get a small patch of greens in. Zeddie, I use those green metal fence posts and green vinyl/plastic fencing to block Miss Jazzy out. They are easy, in-expensive, east to pull out and store for the winter or on my tomato bed I just pull it out once the plants are big enough that pup isn't going to hurt the plants. I will leave some things fenced this year as she steals my veggies!! She ate all my peppers, carrots, and beets last year!! I gave up on most cabbage family plants as it gets too hot too fast here for them and the cabbage worms invade. I am trying some broccoli raab and kale this year. Fresh picked cabbage is so good!

Thanks for the tips! I intended to use those same fence posts, but not certain if vinyl fencing comes small enough to block those darn chipmunks! (may need to use chicken wire). That little critter took out almost my entire tomato crop! Heirlooms mind you. Couldn't eat just one, had to take a bite or two out of every single one! I swear I could look out the window and see him sitting on a stalk near the top of the plant just choosing his next "victim"! Anyhow, best of luck with all your gardening.

Didn't realize Mark Bittman had an updated one out. I was excited to finally order this one. I really want to collect all of his cookbooks, I now have 2, one found in a thrift shop. But then I'm a bit crazy with all my cookbooks. I never download them as I want the real books and scribble notes in them as I try things.

Chicken wire is smaller, luckily no chipmunks here. Those pesky little critters can climb anything. Mostly we have rabbits and squirrels they pretty much stay away, my dog chases them.

If you're in the right zone, see if you can find a Goji berry seedling. I planted one last year and had very good results. Unfortunately, they can't survive the winter here. However, I had a fairly good yield prior to the Autumn weather. :)

I didn't know there was an updated version, either, until I went looking for it in Amazon. I am so happy you told me about this book. I have so much to learn about cooking anything. LOL!

Zeddie where are you? I've been looking at them. I'm in zone 5.

Mom. there is always something to learn about cooking!!! One thing I love about his books is that he doesn't assume you can cook! I love the fact I learn so many new things reading them and the recipes I've tried of his in the past turn out really well. He also gives you substitutions as not all ingredients are available everywhere or they might be something you don't like or may not be able to eat.

I think you can make notes in the e-books. But I haven't done it, so not 100% sure :p

I'm in zone 6 (New Jersey). I have to pull my rosemary, bay, etc. out each autumn and keep them inside. 2 years ago they were too large to bring in...tried to shelter with burlap & dried leaves etc. Alas...they perished.

The Goji should grow in a bush. Mine first spread across the ground like a starfish, then the center stalks grew straight up. The berry's grow in a line down the stalk from top to bottom. The info-card said they wouldn't bloom the first year but I had lots of berries! I had only eaten dried ones prior, but these I just rinsed and ate fresh. They should be perennial, but not for me. :(

Thanks for the info; Gruney's has them you can order, was looking at their catalogue today. They used to have good prices, not so much anymore. I will check some others as my last Gurney's order was not that great. I have room for a bush. I had some rosemary years ago that was hardy, no longer live there, have had no luck with wintering them since. Even if I bring them in they die. My bay, I left out too long last fall and killed it, will pick up another this spring. Think I'll plant a rosemary in a container as well.
