Greetings my Buddies:

What is the deal with the universal obsession on the "Idiot Box"? I wonder why so many people focus so much energy every day on this inanimate object that rules their sense of self, sense of worth and sense of hope!

We do not walk around with a scale number written on our foreheads!

RIDICULOUS! There are so many better ways to measure your progress - use a tape measure to see lost inches; notice your strength and agility when doing tasks or recreational activities; clothing in smaller sizes; how you see your body in the mirror; the accolades of friends and relatives!

Do yourself a favor and GOOGLE an article titled, "Why the Scale Lies" and learn about better ways to measure your progress!

How do YOU measure your progress?

Words of the Week:
"You have a choice. You can throw in the towel, or you can use it to wipe the sweat off of your face."

I am dedicated, determined and diligent.

I think my obsession is I need instant gratification. I need to see progress on the scale BUT, I'm changing that. This week I decided as long as I feel the progress and see the changes in my body and know I did my best than the scale is just a number and I'm more than a number.I need to stop obsessing and channel that energy into an extra walk or something.

Being able to do things that I couldn't.

YES! Letty that is so true! I can do things in the gym at age 60 that I never had the muscle for when I was 40 years old!

My dad called it the "idiot box" as well and watching it was a reward for good behavior, grades, and chores accomplished. That said, I find the computer has become my own sort of "one-eyed cyclops" (the other name he had for the TV). Yes, we must keep moving. Love your statements of affirmation! Onward!

I also think of the TV first. Now that could be many electronic devices. My Dad would take the tubes out in the summer and tell us it was broken. He figured we did not need to sit there, other things to do. I use the scale as a double check. I do jump on it most mornings but I found how I felt, how my clothes fit, what I could do at the gym, and my pain levels decreasing more a gauge to my progress. I would often stay at the same weight but drop a jean size over a couple weeks. Eventually the scale would follow. Now I just do not want to see an upward trend. As long as it bounces around 128-132 I'm good. 134, I don't worry if it goes back down, it's water weight. It was 130 yesterday 128 this am.

Love the "words of the week"! I do look at the scale a lot - too OCD not to, but I base my accomplishments on everything else. The numbers may not move, but my jeans are falling off, I'm wearing smaller shirts, and I can totally see the changes in my body. That's what matters.

Not everyone is obsessed with the scale. I weight once a week. If my weight goes up...I'm doing something wrong.

I wish I could give that article to the people minding the scales when I'm weighing in for a boxing fight ;) though I focus on measurements and strenghts gains too, if the first numbers are going down and the second up, I know I'm heading in the right direction!

When I first started this, I weighed myself a lot. Then again, I was losing weight fairly quickly at the beginning. When my weight loss slowed down a bit, I stopped hopping on the scale every day or two because it was not nearly as satisfying. About then, I started taking measurements. I do that every couple weeks and have had great results with that. Then, my clothes started to fit differently, some feeling too bit, some fitting after being too small last year. That is the best measure of all. :)

I think we buy into it because we buy into what the mainstream media says. BAH! Only in recent years have we tried to be so skinny. I was excited when my Dr told me not to lose any more weight, but at that point I still thought I needed too. We have to change our mental thought processes.

When I go for a walk and I have some spring in my step, hardly breaking a sweat after the first mile.

I know you have referred us to this article more than once, but I finally read it just now. I have noticed recently that my rings have started to feel looser, often spinning themselves around the wrong way during the day. I guess I never made the connection that my fingers are getting fitter too. :)

I look to my clothes fitting and my measurements. My energy level is much better than in the last few years. But my insurance company puts a lot of emphasis on my BMI. I have to get it down to qualify for lower rates. That unfortunately means I also have to rely on the numbers on that dang scale. They don't care that I lost a total of 20 inches.

I think I am improving although the scale has not changed. I have been more active, exercising daily and trying to eat healthy.

In the past, my wedding ring would get too tight and then I knew that I had gained weight. Until I could not wear it anymore and had to buy a fat wedding band. I weigh every morning so I will remember to be careful about my eating and exercising. :)

Wise words, great quote. Well done, HCB.

Deb my wedding ring got tight but since I weighed too much when I got married it wasn't bad. Now that I've lost so much it falls off, like across the room if I gesture too big lol. I'm going to have it sized when I lose a little more. That will be my reminder to watch it.

On humid days I can wear my newer rings, I fit back into my old ones again. MSbuggirl, I have that problem with my newer ones most days also so mostly quit wearing them. No wedding rings to worry about...I think they are in my jewlery drawer.
