Steven Lloyd's Journal, 07 May 2016

Warning...this post is taking a break from my diet and normal weight loss journalling to update and let my FS buddies and others here on the site know of a current bad situation affecting some family members, close friends and neighbors.

Some of you may already know this but for those that don't;  I live in a nice country called Canada, in a province (think state) called Alberta...where agriculture and oil production are the prime drivers of our economy...right now we have been hard hit economically as the world wide low oil prices have severely "downsized" every business directly and indirectly affected by the current economic conditions.  This has hit all of us in the Province, some more than others, Fort McMurray, a city in the North of our province has been particularly hard hit.

Now the really bad news...just recently a small brush fire started near Fort McMurray, one of our largest northern cities...these things happen through human negligence and also natural causes.  The wind picked up and shifted, pushing the fire towards the city and expanding the small brush fire into an uncontrolled, rapidly moving forest fire.  Residents were forced to evacuate with very little notice, piling whatever they could into vehicles and heading out of the city on the only hiway heading south (before it branched into two hiways miles to the south).

Right now between 85,000 and 90,000 people have been evacuated and currently the town has been very hard hit with the fires still raging out of control...the wind and the very dry forests have combined for blast furnace effect...Chad Morrison, Alberta Wildfire Official is predicting that the Ft Mac fire is expected to double in size by late tonight.  My son in law, part of a skeleton crew at a work site to the North of Ft Mac was evacuated by air late last night.

Other fires have also started, prompting recent evacuation orders near Ft. St. John, British Columbia, Northeast of where my Fat Secret buddy, Northernmusicion lives.

Just needed to share this news, if you are so inclined, please pray for the people affected and for safety for the firefighters...if not so inclined, then please hold these people in your thoughts...

We all have burdens to bear, some more than others, take care all....Steven

Yes it is sad. I had not heard about the loss of life on the highway during the evac. That is truly sad. I am happy that you and your family are safe. Stay safe!

Current estimate is a loss exceeding $9 Billion. It's hard to comprehend, and yet the loss to family and community cohesion far exceeds a mere dollar value. I've often thought of what it might be like if there were fires north and south with only one route out. We had a very minor fire in comparison here two years ago. I was in Invermere 20+ years ago when the Canal Flats fire was going on. It started, I think, in late May and we never saw the sun until September, and yet there wasn't ever any rain. Praying for rain. We've had beautiful weather here. Unseasonably warm and beautiful. It's funny how it suddenly seems like a threat. Only weather can really stop something of this magnitude. If structures can be save, they will be, but the fire will go on as it moves deeper and deeper into remote areas, devastating wilderness and wildlife. It's surreal, and yet, what my mind imagines can be nothing like the reality of it.

I'm praying for you and the others Steven, read about it in the news. I live in California fire area and we have our fire season too, luckily I've only seen the ashes it throws on our cars. Please be safe, we are praying!

Well said Bruce...Thank you Smarty, Mom and Pandasmom for your thoughts and prayers. I think we can all relate a bit as to how difficult this would be.

On a side note, Steven I hunted that article you once mentioned "why the scales lie" and I think it rings true! I never knew that when the body loses fat cells it fills it back up with water... I'm on a hydration quest tonight. Thank you for that! I hope all is well in Alberta with you, God bless.

So utterly dismaying to watch this devastation. It's quite remarkable that there has been no loss of life, though. Hoping for containment ASAP...

May a great rain come to snuff out the flames.

Saying prayers Steven, I hope the fire gets contained soon.

Thank you Diablo, Trackin, Shea and Jim...it has been awful for sure, but so far the only loss of life was on the high way during the main evacuation...that was a very sad day. The latest updates are not encouraging as the fire has spread, grown and is so massive now that it really is going to run it's course, as it wants, until a long, hard rain slows it down. The firefighters are focused on keeping the population centers as secure as possible along it's path and extinguishing flare ups in the city and near countryside...they and the other support people have been amazing...so too the folks that have been uprooted from their homes and all the folks helping find beds, food, clothing and other things we take for granted for them. Thank you all once again for your thoughts and prayers, they do make a difference.

Steven Lloyd I have been thinking of you and wondering if this devastating fire was close to you- hope you and your family are safe and sound. It is horrific, and can't imagine the after effects and how people are coping with the terrible event. It amazes me how well things are being handled considering the number of people effected and the area the fire has involved. Scary stuff. Hope it improves soon. Sending you and yours positive vibes for an end soon.

Thanks Newmooney...we are a half day's drive from Fort McMurray, so no danger to us from the fire....We have a son in law that works at a plant just north of Ft Mac who was evacuated a few nights ago... and many friends and neighbors that have been affected as well. Very sad!!
