Atkins DOES have a "maintenance" regime too. The Paleo diet is similar to the Atkins but a bit less strict: no grains, just lots of LEAN meats & veggies (just about all you can eat but NOT starchy veg's like white pototoes), some fruits & nuts/seeds. I bet if you continue to monitor your portions & just steer clear of "white foods" (rice, pasta, bread, etc.) you'll do fine & not gain the weight back. Just be sure to keep up on the exercising.

All the research on Atkins points to NOT raising cholesterol levels. Paleo is another good diet, close to Atkins. I don't know your meat sources, but maybe go to lean meats - watch the intake of protein eating more lean meat (fat isn't there to make you feel full)." According on the information from Harvard (based on the latest studies) "the biggest influence on blood cholesterol level is the mix of fats and carbohydrates in your diet—not the amount of cholesterol you eat from food." So, they suggest staying away from high levels of saturated fats and trans fat. They also see a correlation between high carbs and high saturated fats. Maybe that is the angle you can look from?
