Fritzy 22's Journal, 10 July 2022

I have been having trouble sleeping ever since Bobby got skunked 3 or 4 nights ago. That night I was up from 1-2am and didn't go back to sleep. Then I had a couple nights where I couldn't fall asleep until really late but still got up around 4-5am. Last night I was so tired. I tried to get to sleep before it was even dark, maybe 7:30 to 8pm. I fell asleep and slept soundly. Woke up and fed the cats and Bobby between 5am-5:30 then gave Marco his insulin shot and wrote down the time on a table I keep track of his shots. Fed porch kitty and went back to sleep. Slept until 8am and it was light outside. I thought that I missed the Sunday morning news show I like. Since the cats and Bobby weren't bugging me I went back to sleep. Unusual for me to do that at 8am. Next time I woke it was 12:45!! Did I really sleep until noon? But then I noticed it was dark. So did I sleep all day and night? Then I realized Saturday night live was on. It was all a dream from the time I fell asleep between 7:30pm and 8pm. I slept about 5 hours straight and all the rest was a dream. I even went out to make sure I didn't actually give Marco an insulin shot sometime before midnight. I can't believe I am dreaming my boring life. There was even a part in the dream where I weighed myself and I hadn't lost anything.

I love it when I can remember dreaming, usually. I seldom have trouble sleeping, once I learned to keep my eyes shut and quit checking the clock. If I feel the need, I take 5-HTP at least 10 hours before my time to wake up. I’m heavy so I use 200 mg. I hope you can get your sleep schedule back in line!

Thanks Mac (or Tom). It was just strange I was dreaming about sleeping so I was really confused when I woke up. But I actually slept a solid 5 hours which is better than usual. I didn't fall back to sleep until close to 3am and an hour or so later the cats were trying to wake me up to feed them. Thanks Dazey - I suffer from insomnia all the time - it doesn't seem to matter if there is a moon or not.

I hope to help with advice ive been using to help sleep better, especially when i have trauma flashbacks. 1-idk if you exercise or not, if i exercise close to 5pm i have a hard time sleeping. 2-Coffee/caffeine/B vitamins- contributes to lack of sleeping too. I take my BVit and 1 cup coffee in AM before 10a. Once 10a rolls around i dump my cup. 3-Bananas, strangely enough, aide sleep, so when i have bananas around ill eat 1 before bed too. 4-Of course, sleepy time tea helps too! Traditional Medicinals fav brand Insomnia is usually a symptom of something else thats co-existing. Lack of sleep increases cortisol, since its a stressful state for the body to not have enough quality sleep. Its like a never ending cycle •••!!!•••A BIG tip from my doc-Bed is for sleep. Bed isnt couch, or desk, or 'thinking about lifes mistakes' insomniac space! You will need to re-train your body to associate bed for sleep. Heres how: If you lay down and cant sleep, keep house reasonably dark, but get up and sit somewhere else until you feel tired and THEN go back to bed(this is when i drink warm chamomile sleepy time tea), rinse and repeat as many times as it takes. Itll help retrain brain so sleep comes sooner.

"There was even a part in the dream where I weighed myself and I hadn't lost anything." Somehow, I think this is very funny - definitely something I would dream, too!

Dazey - I don't have a real exercise routine right now. When I do it's walking daily. Right now it's too hot to walk unless I am motivated to get up and dressed before 6am. Any energy I have is in the morning. I usually have 1 or 2 cups of coffee in the morning, and don't drink it after about 10am. I remember one of my doctors sent me to a "sleep class" where they taught me all the things you mentioned. But I am retired. I don't keep a schedule and I can sleep when I want. I try to stay up all day and not take naps, but I can if I want to and I have been going to physical therapy for leg, hip and back pain. I need to lay down a few times a day with an ice pack. Actually I slept 5 solid hours last night which was good for me. It was just disorienting because I was dreaming that I was sleeping and I was confused when I woke up at nearly 1am thinking I had just been awake at 8am. It was strange. Erika - sometimes I take a prescription that helps me sleep. Muscle relaxers make me tired and sometimes the pain mediction does too.

Wow! You must've been really sleep deprived! Hope it gets better! I sleep terrible at night. I fall asleep but can't stay asleep. Getting old really sucks!!💜

Thanks Diana - I feel so lucky if I sleep a solid 5 or 6 hours. Since retiring I just don't keep much of a schedule except the ones my cats and Bobby put me on. They will wake me around 5am to feed them.
