Hermiones Mom's Journal, 27 August 2015

I had a dessert crisis last night. I was in a fit of craving for an ooey gooey chocolate dessert. This of course is a problem in a world in which eating a slice of chocolate cake may satisfy the craving but also make me sick for 3 days. Luckily, we remembered that there were some of my homemade gluten-free brownies in the freezer. I had a small square of brownie with a small scoop of my homemade ice cream and some homemade caramel sauce. I don't think I have ever been more totally satisfied by a dessert. Again, I'm reinforced in my sense that I am developing a healthier relationship with food that will last the rest of my life. I didn't feel as though I needed to finish off the brownies or the ice cream. One sensible portion made me feel like I can go a week or two without anything similar to eat. I am so pleased. I don't want the rest of my life to feel as though I live in the land of denial.

Very good! I was just telling someone today that long term nutrition plans need to include the occasional treats because life happens! I am impressed you made homemade ice cream - I saw your journal about it yesterday~

HCB you are exactly right. I'm 63 years old. The notion of "going on a diet" for a limited period of time is no longer workable. I have to find a way to eat for the rest of my life, and that way of eating has to include the occasional dessert. I don't want to go backwards ever again.

That is just awesome you had all of this already in the freezer waiting for that craving! I have the same cravings ... wanting ooey gooey chocolately stuff. I have to get out my ice cream maker and get busy with some recipes.

Well -- I'm not THAT much of a hero or heroine. I HAVE to make homemade ice cream because I'm eating lactose and gluten free and I really hate all the phony ice cream substitutes I've tried. I do eat sorbet -- but I start to have terrible cravings for ice cream, so now I'm learning to make it from lactose-free half n half, whole milk, 1% milk -- whatever I've got. My neighbor gave me a recipe for gluten free brownies some weeks ago, and I made them, but in order to make sure I didn't pig out, I had a brownie and then cut them into pieces and froze them in the basement fridge. I also make lactose free caramel sauce, which keeps quite nicely in the fridge for weeks. I've found that having a supply of caramel sauce on hand is very good strategy, because you can drizzle a bit on fresh berries and it turns them into a fancy dessert.

That is a great idea! This is not about denying cravings, but finding other ways to manage our food intake!

Exactly! I'm doing well enough that I think I'm going to be able to do this long term. I know I'm losing weight because the pants I wanted to wear today wouldn't stay up.
