Transformation Butterfly's Journal, 26 January 2015

Went into the produce store tonight on my way home. Some kids in the store jumping and around and doing cartwheel. I just stood still and watched them until they noticed I was watching them. They turned around very surprised and I just smiled and said, "Jumping for veggies that great". They all smiled and they followed me to the register telling me they love vegetables. I love this as it was very difficult for parents to get kids to eat vegetables.

I recently read an article where kids in an elementary school could not identify a potatoes lying on a table with other vegetables, but they associated potatoes with french fries. This is so sad that we have all the electronic gadgets to do everything from watching movies to listening to music, but our kids don't have a clue about vegetables. Every parent has to take it upon themselves to educate their kids about healthy vegetables before we raise a generation that will be unhealthy and have forgotten the basic food groups.

Part of the problem is the parents don't know. They interviewed a woman at the grocery store stocking up for the snow storm and her list was chicken strips, fries, chips, and soda. I felt awful for her.

I find the fact such is occurring unbelievable as well. When I was young I not only knew what all the veggies were (I loved my broccoli and green beans) but I knew how to fricking cook them as well. Thing is, I'm not that old, I'm only nearing 27, the parents, even those in my age group, should bloody well know better. I've also noticed stuff like this (Kids knowing what whole foods are) seems to be regional. In Louisiana most kids know their whole foods, in Cali it's hit and miss, up where I live now it's processed food product hell. I guess culture plays a big part too really.

I am South African and live in South Africa, however, I was absolutely amazed when I lived at America at the level of junk food consumerism. Obviously, your grocery stores are a little different to ours but the "eat as much as you can for only $$$" revolted me. Slices of boxed lemon meringue pie in I think, Alpha Beta, nearly blew me over as did the breakfasts, bacon and eggs and pancakes and syrup. Here of course we serve bacon and eggs for breakfast, perhaps with a slice of grilled tomato and a slice of toast but certainly not a tower of pancakes. We have McDonalds and Kentucky in South Africa as well as our own chains and due to their cheap pricing service mainly the poorer people which is an absolute shame.

Rosa, I can understand the revulsion. My kids grew up with veggies, I had to grow them for any assortment. Now selections are much better here in the Midwest . So many parents do not insist their children eat veggies and they do not eat them either. Rosa, I'm a very eclectic cook and love delving into the different cuisines of the world. My two current interests are African and Indian. I'm loving the use of whole grains, beans (I've recently discovered several dried beans from Africa that I've never seen before), vegetables and the incredible seasonings of different cultures within the areas. I'm hunting for a good African grocer in the area.

Love it when kids like their veggies! I agree it's parents who don't teach their children to eat properly, usually the don't either. My 2nd ex would only eat canned beans and corn and an occasional salad. One set of my grandkids love veggies, the other 2 families don't, their dads didn't grow up eating them so my daughters cook very few.
