DairyKing's Journal, 28 August 2014

Good Morning, FS Warriors! Another glorious Thursday. I did not get up and run this morning. I am unorganized with no direction, trying to find my way. Haha! Actually, I guess it's just laziness. Now that I've run that 10K, I have been shopping around for another. I thought I had found my dream race, scheduled for just the right time to allow for adequate preparation, and for a good cause. I'm talking about one of the Save the Ta Tas events - Trotting for Ta Tas. It was going to be mid October in the town right next to mine. They decided not to do it this year - must be a money thing. It's always a money thing. I looked up the results for last year, and it looked like they had about 15 participants in the 10K and about twice that in the 5K. So much for that race. So, once I crossed that hurdle of despair, the seed to exceed had been planted. I started looking for another race. I think I'm going to go for the half-marathon in May 2015 in Galesburg, IL. It's about a 45 minute drive from where I live. I know nothing about the terrain, but it shouldn't be that hot or humid that time of year. Of course, with my luck, it will have the hills from hell, but I've got over 8 months to plan for it. Only problem is, going back to my original point, I don't have a plan yet. I don't want to just run junk mileage, and I don't want to kill myself either. It will take me a little while to work up a plan that fits me, but flexible enough to adjust, if I actually improve along the way, which is the idea.

Yeah, Eddie, stop reading here if you don't want to hear about lack of discipline. I'm sure you've heard the old adage, "Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day; teach him to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime." Well, teach a man to pay inside instead of at the pump, and he'll find the pizza. Yep, blew it last night. Stopped to get gas, and went inside and got one of those little personal pizzas, that have a whole day's worth of calories, and ate it on the way home. They come already cut into 4 equal pieces, almost bite size - well, maybe two or three. Anyway, the point is: the enjoyment does not last near as long as the consequences, or the regret. I vow to never do it again, as I toss the empty box on the floor in front of the passenger seat, where I will again be reminded of my weakness when I pull into the driveway, and deposit the empty box in the trash.

The nursing home gig went really well last night. I did a new solo, "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You?" More of the Jim Reeves version than the Elvis one. They really seemed to like it. I also did one of my regulars, "Heartaches by the Number." We've started closing our show with the "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" number which gets them all clapping and singing. They keep inviting us back, so we must be doing something right. After the Pastor gives a little devotion, in the middle of the gig, we have made it part of our routine to go into the group and make sure we shake everybody's hand or give them a hug, or just squeeze their hand and tell them we're glad they came out to see us, and we care about them, and such. Even the rough looking old characters that act like they don't want to be bothered, seem to warm right up. It's kind of a special time for everyone.

The weight loss has been pretty stagnant. You'd think I was in the maintenance mode. I've got to get serious about this. I just don't want to do anything radical that will be a departure from the lifestyle change. I know I can run my a$$ off and eat 1500 calories a day and drop the weight like crazy, but it will just come right back on if I do that. Believe me, I'm am a veteran at that routine. I just have to be more disciplined about eating in moderation. I've shown that I'm conscientious enough about it to keep from adding weight; I just have to go a step farther and watch the portions, and keep from binging. That pretty well sums things up for me right now. If you made it this far, then I thank you for allowing me to occupy a segment of your precious time. Until next time, Toodles!

Won't be long until you NEED that oversized chair! LOL!!! Just get back on the horse today. One personal pan pizza isn't going to suddenly balloon you up to 847 pounds. At least you can run. With my garbage knee, I can't. I tried running in place for 3 minutes last week. And it went right into the "and thanks for playing" folder.

DK .. how funny.. I too had to stop and fill up the car last night and I my stomach was singing the song of my people so I used the credit card at the pump (something I rarely do) to AVOID going inside as I know that place has a grill and the smell of hamburgers and onions would have ME here doing a gas station confession. NOW I need to go out and see if the calories I saved cost me identity theft, LOL.

Yeah, that's right, Bella, show me up! Haha! Well, at least someone was exercising some discipline.

Thanks, Rockiesfan. Since I just bought that Weider Ultimate Body Works machine (similar to a Total Gym), that's going to have to suffice for weight training, and since it uses my own body weight, it's got plenty to work with.

Your own body weight is one of the best tools you have

Love that song. Can't wait until they put me in the nursing home so you can come sing it to me - LOL

Aw, Buffy, I don't think you're going to a nursing home for a good many decades.

Just a suggestion for you about the canceled race. YOU can still run. Run an ad in Craigslist and start your own unofficial Trot for Ta-Tas and run it anyway. You can still even go out to your friends and have them pledge. Take your best time and make that time be worth $100, and up the pledge $25 for every 10 seconds faster you are than the best time you ever did. I fail to see how an event FOR CHARITY falls apart over funding. The "funding" is the time that the volunteers donate. It shouldn't take money to have people running..... people, yes. Money, no.

Nah, DK ... discipline would have been going inside, paying for the gas, and walking back out with nothing more than a bottle of water. I was 'gas & dash' before my stomach growled again.

DK and Bella - discipline comes in many flavors ;-)

Sounds good, Eddie, but I'm not that dedicated or organized. I prepare and race for fitness and the sense of accomplishment, and if it is for a good cause, so much the better. I've got enough projects. I'm not much of an activist.

I'd probably jog more if there were a gelato place about a mile away ... I'm just sayin'.... maybe they could put out a change jar for a charity

Always a pleasure to read your posts. Love those songs you played in the nursing home. I am sure you and your group liven up the people in the nursing home :) I have to pay at the gas pump because the one place is also a Subway fast food place andhas a Subway glass case right beside the gas register (with all the lotto scratch cards). The other is Sheetz with their deli. I am one person who gains weight by just smelling the food! I am pretty good at resisting temptation now but why put myself through it :)

Haha, Kattay, I'm with you. I think I'm like most people, and I'm addicted to fast foods. Is there such a thing as wholesome fast food? Sometimes the only lesser of the evils is to steer toward Subway. I have gone so far as to have settled for a veggie sub on whole wheat. Yeah, I know, blasphemous talk for a carnivore, but sometimes you just have to sacrifice the needs of the fat for the good of the arteries. I think that's how Leonard Nimoy said it; or maybe not.

Hmmm... you got me there with Subway. How many veggies can you fit into that size roll? Now, if I take out the soft breaded part, forgo the mayo or oil, leave the crust (of course) and stuff the shell with lots of lettuce and tomatoes... well then, it might be healthy HA! But some people might say the sodium, nitrate loaded deli turkey or chicken might be healthy. Alas, no win. :(

Re: Subway - I've seen mentioned here and usually forget when I'm IN a subway that they offer all of their sandwiches as salads. I agree that the meats offered may not be the healthiest - but sometimes when you're out or traveling and time is a constraint Subway can be an option. I do allow myself a Subway stop once a month or so. I like bread. Like it a lot. If I purchase a package of rolls, I guarantee they wouldn't last a week. Going to subway, I can have a single roll and be satisfied for a while. Kattay, I'm like you, I skip the mayo and have just straight vinegar. Lots of spinich, bell peppers, cucumbers and I'm a happy girl. The counter people keep giving me looks when I request more veggies. They're probably wondering why I didn't order a salad in the first place ;-)

Haha; I love the banana peppers. I'll admit I usually get the mayo, but I order "one thin line." Of course, the worker bees all have their own idea of what a thin line is - anywhere from an ant trail to a 4 lane highway. Either way, I've never thrown one away because of their lack of finesse. I have order the "Hunter" sandwich (roast beef and maybe ham, don't remember) as a lettuce wrap without the bread, from Jimmy Johns. Delicious, but I don't think it qualifies as sensible eating; what it lacks in bread it makes up for in pure bulk. Now I'm getting hungry again and I just finished eating an hour ago. Geez; no wonder I'm a couple pounds overweight.

Love your description of the mayo. Yep, that would be sensible eating in my book :)I used to have to scrap mayo off most of my sandwiches, back in the day, when I ate out for lunch most days of the week. Even if I said "no mayo." There it was, guess it was pre-made sandwich just waiting for someone to ask for it :) I love the banana peppers too, and the black olives. Did I mention it is the smell of the bread that drives me wild. I never got that excited about the veggies, salad option or not. Trying not to think about the hard salami. One day I will splurge and then be extra careful the rest of the week. But that will be a story for another day.

Haha, a woman after my own heart. That's like going to Taco Bell and telling them to leave off the sour cream. I've got a 50/50 chance of not getting sour cream. It's like, "How could anyone not like sour cream?" I don't want to offend anyone here, but . . . Oh, never mind, I better not go there.
