EFudd's Journal, 21 June 2017

I've lost almost 30 pounds since I first began to take charge of my life in early April. I wish I could say that I decided to take charge because I recognized that it was time for a change, but the truth is that I did so only after my doctor told me bluntly that I probably wouldn't live to 55, let alone retirement age (I'm 52).

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes four years ago, and for at least two of those years I've eaten whatever I pleased whenever I pleased, and I've lived an extremely sedentary life (you should see my favorite easy chair; it's got a depression in it that could double as a soup tureen). Then in March 2017, my eyesight became cloudy, and an ophthalmologist told me that I'd had a vitreous hemorrhage very near my optic nerve, and that the floaters and snow pattern I was seeing might be permanent (they've faded some, thanks be to God). My primary care doc gave me a referral to a diabetes educator, who showed me my chart, complete with "morbidly obese" and "uncontrolled diabetes" written near the top. After hearing her say a few phrases like "diabetic neuropathy," "diabetes-related macular degeneration," and "increased risk of stroke," I decided that enough was enough. You wouldn't think it to look at me, but yes, I do want to live.

I'm increasingly uneasy these days. 30 pounds lost is when I usually start to cheat on my weight loss efforts. I've never lost more than 30 pounds at a time, and at this point, I usually start to backslide. I'm counting on FatSecret and the help of friends and family to keep me on the straight and narrow, so to speak. The stakes are too high and the alternative too frightening for me to give up now.
