Hi all. I may be the last person on here to realise this, but thought​ I'd post anyway in case anyone else is unaware!
It seems that since the switch from buddies to followers, if you make your journal etc. public, anybody can follow you without your permission. However, if you make your journal etc. 'followers only', people who want to follow you have to send a request, which you can accept, decline or ignore after checking the person out. I've set mine to 'followers only', and am much happier with that!
To my new followers: 1) I may not have followed you back. Sorry I am not being deliberately rude, just sometimes disorganised! You are welcome to message me to remind me 😀 2) If you have made your journal private, in my opinion that is not really fair. You can see all my details, and I would like to be able to see yours. Anyway I can support you better that way. Please set it to 'followers only' if you feel able, and make it a two-way street, as this does restrict access to only people you choose to share with.
