Animals are so derned wonderful! I sure miss having the usual farm critters around. The more interaction they have with people who care for and about them, the brighter their personalities and intelligence shines. Kinda like human young'uns.

Reminds me of my childhood on my grandparents' farm.

Yippee Ki Yay, the loss of so many family farms has hurt so many people in so many ways, especially the children who have never had the experiences of playing and working on them. Some kids never get to feel satisfaction for learning and doing a good job with anything hands-on. They have no idea what pure happiness and joy can be from sweating and getting dusty or muddy, then jumping into a creek! 

I have to add: I do NOT miss having to shuck ear corn for chickens in the middle of winter, with cold-stiff fingers, nor do I miss the middle of the night trip through snow to the two-seater because I refused to use a thunder mug. ;-) 

We shucked and dryed our in the fall and then we keep it in a silo. But we did have major problems with racoons killing chickens. And during the drought for those couple years we had issues with wolves coming down and taking goats and horses. We were also concerned for them taking children but they didn't bother us although they did come to the porch several times. Particularly a large black male wolf which with bread with several of the females on the property. We also used to cut down trees throughout the year and then put them in a wood pile you would have to watch out for snakes and spiders. But I did hate having to rake out the ashes of the wood stove 🤮. But when everybody else had no power we always had heat and we had light and we were able to cook when they didn't have the ability to that which was nice. You made me laugh though; it took me a second to realize you meant use the chamber pot instead of going out and using the outhouse, LOL. We had well water and septic tank by the time I was born but we still had did have an outhouse up at the barn that was for convenience. The bee were killer in the summer 🌞. Although my Nana didn't have electricity or plumbing growing up and they had a cold refrigerator in the creek because of course they didn't have electricity growing up. Is still functioned even when I was growing up it was really cool. For those of you that don't know what that is it's literally slabs of stone that are set smoothly in the creek bed so that the creek doesn't run in it and you literally would put your food inside so it would stay cold. I do have to say I did not get in trouble very much as a young person but 95% of the things that I got beaten for was chasing chickens. I'm an ill reputed Chicken chaser, lol. 

Leah_guffey, our farm was too little and old to have a silo, and we were out in the sandy, piney woods off the grid. Had to bring a frost-bitten calf into the house to thaw out when he decided it was a good idea to get born in a blizzard.
