Daddy Manatee's Journal, 14 December 2022

Will be bringing the herd in today. Going to have the little cow I had to pull the stillborn calf out of checked to make sure she is ok. Also need to have the bull checked out, he is limping. And a couple other cows I am concerned about will be checked too. So hopefully the herd will cooperate and come in nice and easy. Then sort and wait for vet to show up. I should get LOTS of steps in today. Perhaps I’ll have time to slip into town and grab a burger (Diablos post has me craving one now). It’s going to be a good day.

Hope you found the time to get that burger! And that your herd stays healthy!

Gave some meds to a calf that had been coughing. The bull just has sore shoulder muscles, I’m sure the muddy ground makes it slippery. The little cow that had the stillborn pulled out is fine and healthy! YEAH!! The other cows are bred save one. Should be a nice easy winter.

And I did manage to grab the burger, it was dinner rather than lunch. Or you could call it a very late late lunch.

I checked and did six miles in and around the corral and in the corral was the added difficulty of ankle deep mud

I like hearing your story. This reminds me of my annual vacations on an Austrian Cow farm. I grew up in Berlin Germany and my parents would send me to this Family in Austria every summer since age 8 until I was 18 and later also in Spring. I have the best memories. I learned how to bring the cows out to Pasture, milk the cows. I watched calf’s beeing born. I learned gardening and splitting wood and driving a tractor at age 12. Also I helped with hay and corn growing. We would pick wild berries and wild mushrooms. the grandma taught me knitting and of course baking which I still do to this date. The recent picture of my braided sweet bread was from them. Farm life is hard but so rewarding.

Golf, the bread did look really cool! And it’s pretty awesome the experiences you had growing up. I’m sure farm life and Berlin life were very different. I have driven tractors since I was 8. My dad Only started cattle when i was in my 20s and I was gone much of the time with school and life. Last ten years I have really taken to the cattle and only last year did I buy my own herd (bought my dads) so far I have gone through two drought summers lost about 6-7 calves and 3-4 cows. Sone day I’ll turn a profit but it mostly a hobby, therapy and exercise all riled into one. And the herd is doing well.

Wow. Huge Respect for you doing that. Life were better if everyone would do that. I am more country at heart than City. I also remember having to do laundry by hand without a washing machine or dryer but boiling water scrubbing the laundry on an old fashioned scrubber so now when I hear people complaining about doing laundry it just makes me laugh. Nice meeting you on here. Keep on sharing your story. It’s pretty awesome.

I had to laugh at the laundry story! Yeah I thankfully never had to do that!
