Signed up for LA Fitness at lunch time b/c they have a pool. Of course then the "personal trainer" tells me that swimming isn't going to be enough for me and in fact may hurt my ankles. What a jerk. I think he just wants to sell personal training. I also belong to a gym where all of the weight lifters go but I don't have the money for personal training right now. I just want to burn some calories in the pool and get active. I think the pool will be fine. Work will pay for most of my membership except the "initiation fee". These gyms are all alike with the baloney fees.

Got an "unwhich" from Jimmy John's for lunch, which is a sandwich on lettuce.

Honestly, the upselling for personal training at gyms is relentless. Good for you, shelly! You are doing fantastic.

WTH - how can you hurt your ankles in the pool? You do you! Swimming is no impact and good for you!

I’m sorry you had that experience. The LA Fitness I belong to isn’t like that at all. They offered services of a trainer and my husband and I declined. They didn’t press. I’m sure it happens, though. The only way I can think of you hurting your ankle in the pool is if you power jump feet first into 3 feet of water. Lol. Be firm about to them and go to the gym and swim! 😊

Sorry a pool is not high impact so probably not much a problem for ankles. Swimming and water exercise has been highly recommended to me by my docs and physical therapist and they stress it's great for anyone with joint problems.

I'm was with HCB... how do you hurt your ankles swimming? So I googled. You all could too but I'll save you the search: Foot pain and swimming can be just as debilitating as it can with other sports. Motions like jumping off the blocks, pushing off the walls with flip turns, and even just the constant pointing and flexing your toes can strain your lower limbs. Foot cramps while you swim can be debilitating. Tendinitis on the top of the foot and in the Achilles is common. This can lead to heel issues, top of the foot pain, and even ankle discomfort. On top of that, pools are perfect environments for common infections like athlete’s foot and fungal nails.

I wouldn’t have even thought about that. Thank you, Bella!

You're welcome. I feel a little better about the trainer now. Less 'bait & switch'.

I do NOT understand how you could hurt your ankles in the pool!! I have a disability, and both of my doctors have told me to go swimming. No pain and so much flexibility in the pool! Good for you for realizing the difference. :)

The pool is a great idea! Good for you for making that decision and enjoy!

Pool is great. I do not see how it can be very dangerous to ankles compared to anything else. Go girl

Well, I see what Bella researched as being valid info. I wouldn’t think it’s something a majority of people would need to worry about unless they have a pre-existing ankle or foot condition that can become easily aggravated. I’m not a doctor so I don’t really know. lol. I do think he was up selling, though. I say go swim and do your thing. 🙌😊

Itsy and Bella you describe me. The pool is not my friend.

Swimming will be very good for you on many levels. Don’t let anyone tell you differently. You are stretching, moving, deep breathing, exercising every joint in your body, not an injury prone activity. There is no downside. Water also provides that resistance. Keep it up.

I get foot cramps when swimming...but only when I am standing on my tippy toes in high water. I hate all gym germs. People's sweat linger on the equipment too...so whether in pool or not, you expose yourself to germs. Can't go wrong with sticking with laps.
