Bought one of those pull-up bars that you hang from in your doorway. Well, that's what I do on it - hang! Found out that picking up my 220 lbs. is a lot harder than I thought. Oh great, why didn't I just let well enough alone? Now I'm gonna have to work on my upper body.

Just remember that no matter where you go, well . . . there you are.

I've been wondering for a while if I could do a pull-up- just not enough to actually invest in a bar. Keep us posted on how it goes! A litle upper body strength will be a good thing ;-)

I definitely cannot do pull-ups.. every so often I use the assisted pull-up machine at the gym, but a PT told me to stay away from that for now since I've been having problems with my shoulder. I totally need to work on my upper body strength too!! Good luck!

I totally want to get one of those... let me know how it goes? WEighted squats are apparently a good place to start if you want to be able to do pullups... similar muscle groups.

I got one this week too. And I love it. Try jumping up slightly and slowing your falling motion. I also like hanging from it an pulling my knees up. Can't wait until o am actually strong enough to attempt a pull up!

Sounds good..... Does it damage your door though? - that would be my only issue. Sounds like great exercise - you have to start somewhere LOL... Just be careful what you wear when doing it - nothing furry - the neighbours will think you have an new pet orang-utan. LOL

You guys are really humorous! I actually thought it would be a good idea to get this so I could do the extended leg raises and tighten my stomach. I'm still a little anxious about what might happen with my legs up in the air if the thing breaks or comes loose though. I'll have to think about that one. The benefit may not outweigh the risk. It does seem to be a very robust design. It is also good for pushups and sit-ups. Bren, I think pushups on the counter are great, but you must be very fortunate to have six feet of counter space to be able to climb up there and do a pushup. That could really hurt your shins if your feet slip into the sink. :) Funny Skinny, but I think I could work out in my birthday suit and nobody is going to see me at the time of the morning that I work out. Anyway, I'm not sure anyone has seen a gray orangutang yet. I think you're onto something Sunshine Girl; letting yourself down slowly would be a good way to build your strength up gradually to the point where you could reverse that action and pull yourself up. As far as damaging the door goes - there's a lot of foam cushion where the bar rests against the door frame; the only possible marring I could think of would be where the plastic bar on the other side of the doorway rests above the 'upper door trim' (which your doorway has to have for this to work). In fact, I see that as the one component that could give way and ruin your day.

Ick, pullups! Good luck! Have you tried any yoga or pilates to strenghen your core muscles? It's a good workout, but non-impact to joints, I didn't notice the effect until the soreness the next day! It is an all-over soreness, but feels great when you get better and better!

ZippiDani, I don't have the patience for yoga or pilates. I've got to do the macho gruntin and sweatin thing like Rocky Balboa. I've got an old universal gym set that has been out of commission for a while; I've just got to weld a part on and figure out where all the cables are supposed to go. Then I'm sure I'll look like Rocky in a few weeks. :)

That's the spirit!! Well... if you're ever in the mindset to try something new... then you only need a mat! Happy Thursday!
