I need to vent.

Seriously. I just spent an hour with a nutritionist who ran all up and down about a plant based diet is the only way, you will never lose weight, stay in shape, not get wrinkles, the whole enchilada if you eat anything but plants. She was so seriously that it was the RIGHT way and had all this 'this study says' going on.
Those of you that know me also know that I am a lifelong either vegan or leather wearing egg eating vegan. I WAS STILL OVERWEIGHT! and unhealthy! on a plant based diet! Horrors!
After struggling for years I decided to be open minded and try a different diet. I am even dabbling in chicken sacrifice to the horror of my vegan friends.
But you know what? I have lost the same amount of weight in the last 3 months that I have in the last three YEARS. My health issues have all but disappeared. I am not hungry or grazing all day. I feel awesome.
But actually that's not the point.....the point is there is no ONE diet. Everybody is different. I am all for sharing experiences but don't sit there and make me feel like a criminal for eating fat or meat or fruits or whatever. Be opened minded. Be supportive. At the end of the day it doesn't matter what diet you are on, what matters is sticking with it......

ok, done.

Do your thing. It works for you. That's all that matters.

I don't get into arguments with vegans or vegeterians, not worth it. Nobody is going to change anybody's mind anyway. You just do what works for you.

Agree 100% Nichol!!

There is no "one size fits all" when it comes to diet. You have to find what works for you and then stick to it. Great job on being willing to change things up!

Glad this is a safe place for all of us when we need to both"vent". Completely agree with post AND comments. Take Care, All :)

Maybe you need a new nutritionist?

Agreed!!!! Its sad to see the health community always battling what diet is the best diet. I am always hearing vegan and paleo people clash all the time. I feel like if a diet works for you and you are feeling better then you should follow that way. My mom has this attitude to my eating of fat. She thinks that I will get heart disease and die if I keep eating bacon LOL. It sounds like you are doing great learning what works for your body. Everyone is different! That is the beauty, there is no cookie cutter way to think anymore. I feel for a nutritionist who wants to help many people, they have to be open minded to their clients views as well. Because everyone is different, different foods, and macros work for different people and activity levels. Keep it up!

From what I've heard, most "nutritionists" don't know what's good for each individual. One told my severely diabetic friend that he should be eating 30 or more carbs at EACH meal! What? Are they nuts???? So, follow your heart (or your stomach) and eat what YOU think you should eat! Remember, what works for you won't work for everybody else and vice versa! Good luck!

I'm eating a plant based diet. I just happen to let some critters help me with the process. Cows eat plants; I eat cows. Pigs eat plants; I eat pigs. Chickens eat plants; I eat chickens. Deer eat plants; I eat deer, and turkeys, and rabbits, and squirrels, etc. Totally plant based. :-{) Sometimes I cheat the critters and actually eat plants before they can get to them. I'm evil that way. Tell the vegans to go look in the mirror and grin, then open wide and check out their teeth. We have canines, which are designed to eat meat. We also have molars which are designed to grind plant matter. Humans are omnivores. We are designed to eat just about anything that walks, crawls, swims or grows. It is both our salvation and our downfall. It worked great when we were simple hunter/gatherers, but agriculture and industry have provided us with "foods" that, while convenient and tasty, are not compatible with the physiological design of human beings. As a result, we get obesity, diabetes, cancer, and a host of other maladies that our ancestors easily avoided. Modern medicine can keep us going in spite of that, but in reality we don't live much longer than our ancient relatives. If you are eating a variety of unprocessed foods, you will feel better, lose weight and improve the quality and probably the length of your life. So hang in there Nic!

I absolutely agree with you 100% Nichol. It's not the diet plan or fitness program that determines your success. It is your individual tenacity to stick with what works for you. Find the formula that delivers results for you, do not quit, & you cannot fail. As far as vegan or non-vegan; elephants are herbivores, so a plant based diet does not exactly translate to a small body. My plant based diet approach is more in-line with Russ V's. Just do what works for you. You're the only one that matters on this climb.

Russ V.... thanks for the smile. I also follow your diet.

Giant pandas survive mainly on bamboo, a plant, and they're not skinny. ;-) Seriously though, I agree with you that everyone is different and there's no one-size-fits-all healthy diet.

This is certainly the place to vent! I agree with all the others' comments and I truly believe that each of us are responsible to do what is best for our individual health. You do what is best for Nichol. You know what works and what doesn't.

I wish I was vegan. But, I am not. I will never eat veal and other kinds of meat. Basically, I'll say, I eat chickem, hamburg, and certain fish. I do not follow any planned diet. I eat what I want. The only thing is since joining this website, I try to stay within calorie amount and I get on the treadmill at least 4 times a week. I think doing your own diet is what works. Good luck on yours and ty for sharing.

I'm glad you found something that works for you! I have an ex-vegan friend that had to start eating some meat for health reasons. For him, eating free ranged beef and chicken made it a little easier for him to be an omnivore. And don't worry about what your nutritionist said, it sounds like you have a perfectly good head on your shoulders and you have tons of support here! :)

My dad has to see a nutritionist. This person is supposed to help him get healthy foods in him to help him survive. He has emphysema so bad that 1/3 of all his calories goes to just breathing. My mom feeds him good stuff. This is stupid. What is funny is that he wants a nutritionist to back up his eating plan (this is not my mom's plan). His philosophy is "if it ain't fried, it ain't food." We keep telling him a nutritionist isn't going to back him. I told him he needs good fats: olives, olive oil, avocados, peanuts. These are all high calorie high good fat foods that he likes. His insurance company should just pay me lol.

I totally agree with you Nic, and with so many comments here. What works for one person, doesn't necessarily work for others. Plus as your body adapts to your calorie/macro intake, it is time for a shake up to lose weight/inches. Most doctors and those in related fields are always trying the "one size fits all" techniques that are so outdated. It is in the individual's best interest to keep on top of the latest research and use some common sense in what works best for their own body. Kudos to you!!

msbuggirl that is what really PO'ed me, I had to pay for that visit as part of my care support plan and it was a total waste of time.
