So it turns out that I had Plantar Fasciitis. The way that I run makes me prone to it. Some orthopedic inserts in my shoes have helped to all but eliminate the pain over the weekend, and I was even able to do calves yesterday!

You need to rub the arch really hard in a circular motion about 10 times at first and then I got it to 20. First in one direction then the other. Then the heel the same thing. I did it for a month and it was gone. Amazing. The pain was decreasing steadily from the first week on. Let me know if it helps

Can this be done with a tennis ball against the floor, do you think?

I guess but I used my knuckles. It was what I had available. You can also use the heel of your hand

If you can get your hands on a golf ball, it works well in the arch of the foot and on the bottom of the foot.. However I warn you do not use it more than 5 minutes on each foot. I can only assume your ankle is better.
Also sitting on a balance ball I hear helps while watching tv because it stretches that part of the foot. By the way, I don't have Plantar. I know people who do. I hope you find something that works for you.
Enjoy your day. Truly, J.J.

So glad to hear you found out what it was and with the orthotics will be able to continue exercising.

My plantar fasciitis was helped when my doctor pointed out that I was favoring one side. Paying attention, I figured out that I raised one hip while walking due to a back muscle injury pain, which translated into back pain, leg pain, and the plantar pain. The orthotics really are a miracle though!
