What is food? Food is defined as “Any nourishing substance that is eaten, drunk, or otherwise taken into the body to sustain life, provide energy, promote growth, etc.”

Did you notice that the definition mentions nothing about taste? Are we as humans the only species that have taste preferences? Will a wild animal that is starving turn away from eating something that tastes terrible? More than likely they will not, since their instinct to survive is stronger than their taste preference. However, we humans will readily make bad food choices which do the opposite of sustaining life. These bad choices are actually killing us.

Humans in general seem to be picky eaters. You hear it all the time. “I don’t like steak.” “I love ice cream” “Seafood turns my stomach.” “I could eat cake for every meal.” I know for me, I didn’t necessarily dislike one option, I just much preferred some other option which was not healthy but better tasting to me. I think we all do this, don’t we? That’s how we became unhealthy and then lead us to our quest to be healthier. Right?

We are fortunate to have an abundance of foods to choose from. Unfortunately, there are a lot of bad-food choices out there as well. I challenge you to think a little deeper about your food choices, or non-food choices that you make. When I say non-food choices I am talking about foods that are not nutritious. If you will redefine food in your mind by massaging the definition a little bit, it may help you make better food choices during times of indecision.

Here is how I define food. “Any NOURISHING substance that is eaten, drunk, or otherwise taken into the body to sustain AND IMPROVE life.”

See what I did there? Changed “sustain life” to “improve life” and I emphasize “nourishing” and took out the junk about providing energy and promoting growth. Who cares if your food provides energy or promotes growth? We can eat a cup of sugar and consider that a meal but it does nothing to improve your health nor does it provide nourishment. It may promote growth, but not in the right places. 

Let’s define nourishment really quick since it keeps coming up. Nourish is defined as “to sustain with food or nutriment; supply with what is necessary for life, health, and growth.” You see, nourish means to consume food that is healthy and necessary for life.

You already know that there are a lot of food options out there for us modern day humans. Sometimes we make wise choices and other times we don’t. If you will stop for a minute and redefine food in your head before you reach for that big bowl of ice cream (or whatever food weakness you may have), it may just help you to make a better choice.

This is the way I now view food (and non-foods). It has worked wonders for me. All the things I use to love to eat that were unhealthy, are no longer even consider food to me. They are non-foods that I now consider as unnecessary treats. Cake, ice cream, cookies, candy bars, sodas, pizza, hamburgers, bread, tv dinners, etc.

You might have noticed that all the foods listed above are basically food “inventions”. Food inventions are what I see as combinations of many different substances to make a food. (or non-food in most cases.) “Eating clean” means sticking to real foods and doing your best to avoid non-food treats.

I hope this has nourished your brain a little. Good luck with clean eating and making wise food choices!

Agree. My "must-haves" have changed considerably. Sugar -even raw turbinado- and Olive Oil last for weeks now (when I used to buy bulk white sugar and canola oil every week)! I've had a pound a sweet cream butter for well over a month and this is something I'd buy and use maybe a pound (or more) per week!! A lot of the world's 'delicacies' are foods the majority of us would not touch with a 10-foot pole! So, YES, tastes are a choice! :D

Food for thought :) I think many of us have tried to make that change... For me, food is something fresh and natural. I want processed foods only if I can read all the ingredients and prefer that there be fewer than 3. Organic is now important to me too. I want food that has not been altered or genetically engineered, not poisoned or medicated with antibiotics, growth hormones and pesticides. I don't always get that - these things can be costly - but I am conscious of it. I have not lost the desire for bad things - I would love something sweet and still break down and have a burrito, chops and salsa on a cheat day - but I am now conscious of what I put into my mouth more than I ever have been in my life. None of this shows on the scale for me generally but I know that in the long term, these changes/realizations will help keep me living and moving with eyesight and all my limbs for the long term.

100% ALEXZWYK, the food supply can be quite scary to me! Budget is an issue but making the healthiest food choices with my money, whether it be organic, fresh, flash frozen, etc., is the goal

Very well written. Although i cannot deny my humanity. I hate some tastes and i like other tastes. I just shift and sjimmy between the healthy things i like, and the things i must eat to live either healthy or not ... don't you just hate it when people tell you that you can and should eat all the same things as before only less??? I could just shoot them! It is consiously eliminating the foods that are in the way of providing the perfect macro-day

Great post! (However, when it comes to food preferences... you've clearly never fed a cat.)

Great post. I saw a documentary recently that correlated our current obesity epidemic in the US with post industrial society...abundance of food that is less expensive than the past, processesd foods, greater personal wealth, and changes in farm subsidies at the federal level, etc. It was interesting and eye opening. My participation on fat secret with an RDI of calories, logging my food, and actively learning more about diet has helped me immensely to make wiser choices and eat satisfying foods while losing weight. I'm thankful for this site and the people on it.

Litho, I was reading and thinking about my one very fussy kitty who might sniff if we"re lucky, then walk away without a word, like I should know that flavor is unacceptable. All my others mow down everything and anything though.

An excellent and well written post. One that I will read often as a reminder to make conscious choices and continue to retrain my thoughts towards processed food. NM recently commented “If it tastes good, spit it out!” Words were never truer for me. But it is sad that taste good and good for you are not normally the same. Or that so many of us need to retrain our taste buds to appreciate that truly good food is not this denatured and highly addictive stuff that is heavily marketed and sold. It’s just poison, damn good poison, with damaging effects. Great journal thanks for sharing.

Brent, very good post. Actually, I really believe that food has to taste great to satisfy. Great tasting food is real nutritious and prepared with some thought and care. Once you get used to eating fresh foods that are prepared well, the junk foods and processed foods in most cases taste awful. I had 1 gourmet type brand potato chip a while back, it was horrible, yes, you can eat only one...I had a donut a couple months ago didn't finish it as it was too sweet it also made me sick to my stomach.

I seldom eat donuts any more. Youngest brother bought some fresh glazed over for the kids couple months ago. I had one...my mouth felt sticky and oily at the same time and then I had a screaming headache (what caused that?). Haven't touched one since. And, trust me, Girlfriend used to be able to put away some hot, glazed donuts!! We'd buy them at least 2doz at a time for our family of 4!

I think most of us in a survival situation would also find we have the ability to eat just about anything to survive. Our problem is choice... and the fact that half of what you can buy at the grocery store is not what, or at least processed in a way that we are supposed to eat it. You remember my McDonalds meal a couple of months ago? It was so NOT how I remembered it. The consequences were still there though. Now I'd rather have an apple as my 'treat' with real food.

Well said Bigbassbrent. I think that we humans have forgotten that it is our basic needs that keep us healthy. I really enjoyed your words sir.

My dog is a picky eater so I would say yes, non humans can taste.

Bella, my dogs and my bird all have their favorite things. I do believe they do as well. Right now I had to get colored bird food as they were out of the natural one and Gabby was on his last bowl. He won't eat the green ones. Munch {dog} loves sweet stuff and bread won't touch most fruits or veggies, Jazzy {dog} begs for fruits and veggies and gobbles them down.

You could say that my dog is a picky eater too. He picks at ya until you give him some. ;)

Too funny!!! My bird yells at me if I'm cutting veggies.
