Confession and then a query:

Wow, guys. I did the Whole 30 elimination plan in September, and then the Whole30 reintroduction phase in October. Point being, I was without any sugar for 2 months. I mean, I did have organic fruit, but I steered away from all processed / refined sugar, even combing through ingredients. I was so energetic, balanced, happy, and healthy after a couple of weeks of that. It was greeeeaaaaat!

And then I had a sugar frenzy on Holloween! I had pie, candy, chocolate, and also chips and dip and fried chicken. All in one day, on Holloween. After 2 months without sugar, I had the biggest sugar high in the history of the world. It was epic how high I was on this drug. My demeanor was comparable to that of a crack addict. It was funny at first, especially while trick-or-treating. And then I wanted to go to sleep and could not!

Since then I've experienced the worst of physical symptoms. It's like the biggest tummy ache, combined with irrational emotions, depleted energy and focus, and a slew of physiological issues. It's safe to say that my body is definitely punishing me for bringing back the sugar and processed food. Lesson learned!!! Now, I don't want to have any sugar at all, but definitely at least for a couple of weeks. I don't want my body to get used to that drug again.

QUERY:
Have any of you experienced anything like this and decided to live without sugar and/or processed food? What does that look like for you? How do you make it sustainable?

Ingesting sugar from rice, wheat, potatoes, etc. helps maintain health. Sugar in sweets and canned juices has no other nutrients. There are no problems with sweets and juices that you eat occasionally, but I don't recommend eating them a lot. I like processed foods, but recently I have less frequent eating.

Actually, my normal WOE is no sweets and little processed food. I had candy last week and wonder if it was because I was feeling sick. My body was trying to "up" itself? Totally not a good feeling. I tend to get puffiness when I eat sugar...even drinking juice does it. So what does it look like? I buy chicken and beef in bulk, meal prep, and freeze. Quinoa, pasta, and some rice. I do buy high quality grain bread or bake it myself. Every few days I'll have a granny smith apple with peanut butter (occasionally berries if in season). I roast a lot of veggies. I feel good eating this way. Sorry if TMI, but hope this helps.

Nope, and no, it isn't sustainable for me.

I have and I understand. I frequently have sworn off all sugar or simple carbs of any kind for months on end. Never have I been able to sustain it even though I did feel very good. When I got serious this year about losing weight, I went to the old plan of thinking zero sugar would help me. I did that for maybe a month and then because of many successful people here encouraged eating everything in moderation, I decided to include small amounts of anything as long as I am consistent with hitting my RDI. Yep, a few times I have gone overboard and paid for it, but I have found small, controlled treats keep me from going crazy like I used to... Bindging on it because I knew I would be giving it up again tomorrow. Yep, I do feel like sugar is a dreadfully, unnecessary thing, but gosh it is nice to have! Mostly I still try to eat naturally occurring sweets, but I also am learning it have some treats sometimes without beating myself up. Balance is hard to find for each of us, but it is really beautiful! No one can tell you what will work best for you! Clearly, you have a lot of dedication! You will figure out the best plan for you!

Here is the thing, everyone calls these foods sugar. All of the foods you mentioned that you ate have just as much of not more fat energy. Sugar isn't the issue, fruit is great and no one is binging on Skittles. It's the hyper palatable foods that contain both high amount of fat and sugar together.

For sure, Diablo! I can pretty happily eat 300 calories worth of skittles, but make it pie, cake, donuts and 3000 calories are easy to consume!

It's feasible but it takes planning. You cook at home to avoid processed food and you can freeze homemade soups, spaghetti sauce with tons of vegetables, anything that you like for the days where there is very little time to cook. Halloween can be more difficult to avoid sugar. Either you keep it as your yearly binge day or you get someone else to buy the candies and pass them, go out for dinner or you buy candies that you hate. There will be that day where you eat processed food for whatever reason or that you do crave some sugar. You satisfy your craving if you need to and don't feel guilty.

I have had similar problems with a real craving after being without sugar for a period of time. I try to have a couple days each weak with real low carb. I find I do better to follow the Mayo Clinic guide of allowing up to 75 calories per day or sweets or treats if I have a real yearning. I have two thin cookies of from 25 to 50 calories total with a cup of tea for a treat and it seems to work for me. Otherwise, I have healthy snacks with Greek yogurt and fruit or a veggie and light dip. Also, I have a friend who lost over a hundred pounds and has kept it off for the past year through WW. She said she loves chocolate and has one tootsie roll in the am with her coffee and it works for her. So some of us seem to be able to do better if we think we can have a little something and a lot of days we skip it. But it is there as part of the plan. Pat yourself on the back for how long you made it without the sugar and get right back to it. Hope this may help a little.

Sugar is the evil in our diet, those evil food manufactures should be forced to make food with less sugar or no sugar at all.

I try to eat mostly unprocessed food, lots of fruit and vegetables with meat/poultry/fish. I do eat some rice/potatoes/bread/pasta, but not every day. That said, I use honey in my tea and sugar in my coffee. Sometimes I add a little sugar/honey to my yogurt. I also occasionally have 2 or 3 small cookies or a couple of small chocolate candies. I very rarely have large amounts of sugar (a 3 pound bag of sugar lasts me years), and I'm not a binger. I don't think I've ever experienced the kind of sugar high you're talking about, even on the rate occasions when I eat a whole dessert. I'm guessing sugar, like so many other foods affect different people differently.

YUP!!!! I also had a bunch of candy and junk food this past week, very rare for me to do that. Stomach still does not feel the best and sleep was definitely erratic and I'm still tired. I am not used to all that sugar and processed junk. I eat very little processed foods It's a reminder to me that not eating healthy foods in excess is not nice to my body and to make better choices. Do not beat yourself up, life happens. Whole 30 makes you feel good, go back to it's premises with no guilt. I read somewhere that sugar can act much like a crack high for some people, not sure about the research behind that.

After being on keto for a while, I went off for vacation and omg!! That first sugar high is so crazy!! I remember I ended up jogging around my hotel building just to get rid of the jitters 😂😂 I, very happily went back to keto after vacay but I enjoy eating sugar too much. I never could stay on it for too long.

I don’t think there is any down side to cutting out sugar if you are happy without it. It is poison 😒

I eat no sugar normally. I do not see it as an issue. I do add a bit of sweetener to some things but I do not need that daily. I feel that my body and tastebuds adjust. I like what I eat so I do not feel I am missing out on anything. If I do eat sugar after staying off it I usually start with eating some real food first and then the sugar will not rush you as much.

I must agree with the others that it seems that people seem to be different when it comes to sugar. I have cut out processed food and sugar, and after two weeks found I did not miss it. But then again, I have never really enjoyed ice-cream like other people seem to. I guess it's just not really my thing. However, I crave cheese, and really like wine -- probably more than people who enjoy ice-cream! So -- do what works for your own body. We all have our individual challenges to get rid of the weight. Good luck.

binkytexas, I really appreciate your sharing of what makes you feel good. Hearing others' WOE is super helpful in seeing that everyone has to find out what works best for them. Also, I love that you sometimes bake your own bread!! I have learned that gluten is not my friend, and I want to learn how to make gluten-free bread at home. If you have any tips on learning this, please feel free to send some information my way!

Hey Diablo360x: Did you try it and it was unsustainable? How did you feel without refined /processed sugar that you decided that it was unsustainable? I'd love to hear more about how you got to that determination. Thanks in advance!
