This framework characterizes four stages that most of us go through when learning something new:
Unconscious incompetence Conscious incompetence Conscious competence Unconscious competence This model is based on the premise that before a learning experience begins, we’re unaware of what or how much we know (or don’t know), and as we learn more we progress through four stages until we reach unconscious competence—that state of being so competent that we can perform the skill or task unconsciously.
This is not a new concept but I like the verbiage. It applies to anything new that we are trying to do or trying to learn. It certainly should apply to everyone on FS who is trying to live a healthier lifestyle. At first, you don’t know what you don’t know.. you then move to, “gee, I don’t know anything about diet nutrition, macros, vitamins, health”. You make a decision to educate yourself and make choices that affect how the remainder of your life will look like and how good or bad your future health might be. Conscious competence is where you practice what you have learned but it takes effort and mindfulness to keep up the momentum and do it right. Then comes the magic—- unconscious competence. You have developed the HABITS that it takes to maintain your chosen lifestyle without it always being a fight. It just becomes natural. You can sidestep periodically but the habit to continue on is always there..
I see people comment periodically with “you got this”. But in reality many really don’t “got this”. I like— you can do this. Or, do you have a solid plan for developing habits to help you make better choices. Or, does your action plan need tweaking, it is great giving people ATTA BOYS and POOR BABIES, but does it actually have a real benefit for them. Sometimes it seems to me that people are looking for affirmation that “it’s ok”, or they are looking for FORGIVENESS, get absolution (your penance is 2 trips to the gym today) and continue.on doing what they have always done.
The element to treating and/or overcoming obesity is the psychological, emotional component that may be the root cause Of the obsessive compulsive and binge eating in the first place. Until some of those issues are addressed directly the struggle continues.
