Happy Sunday!

Hotel exercise room etiquette question: Is it okay to use the elliptical for 44 minutes? I came into the exercise room this morning while a couple were using the two treadmills. I was just getting on the (only) elliptical when another woman came in. When she realized all of the equipment was in use she huffed a little. The gentleman on the treadmill told her he only had 8 minutes left. I told her I would be 44 minutes. She looked annoyed, but I wasn't sure exactly why. The guy left, she got on the treadmill. About 35 minutes into my workout she asked how much longer I'd be. I told her I still had nine minutes. At this she commented "STILL?!" and stomped off, then came back and got on the treadmill again...she made it really uncomfortable to finish my workout...so my question is - was I being an equipment hog? Is it customary to cut your workout short if someone else wants to use the equipment? I probably would have quit early or switched to the treadmill if she hadn't been so obnoxious. Being a "newbie" to the whole workout thing, I have no idea if I was being rude. I just don't know...do other people cut their workout short to accommodate others? Yesterday I had to wait for the elliptical. I just kept coming back to see if it was not being used. I didn't expect the guy who was on it to cut his time short for me...I just thought, "Bummer, I guess I'll have to get up earlier tomorrow."

This is probably more of a forum question, but I want to have this in my journal too...it is an experience to add to all my other new lifestyle experiences.

Make your Sunday sensational!

The only etiquette violation I see in your post comes from the huffy woman who apparently thinks the world should move according to her schedule. If she got on the treadmill at about 8 minutes into your workout, and was still on it at 35 minutes in, she clearly has no objection to using the equipment for a long time. She sounds like the kind of person who buys a zone 5 airline ticket and then spends the whole time griping about how long she has to wait to board, and gets crankier still when she gets on the plane only to discover that there is no more overhead space for her carry-ons (and she probably has more than the allowable limit of those). You get no benefit from a workout that gets cut short, and hotels provide exercise equipment on a first-come-first-served basis. Your only obligation as a good guest is to make sure you wipe down the equipment when you're done. Most of us learn before kindergarten how to share and how to wait our turn. Apparently, this woman was out of class that day.

I too think the huffy woman is in the wrong. Sounds like she would have huffed if you said you were done.

I would think no issue unless there are time limits posted. I wouldn't worry about it.

Many places post a 30 minute minute sign because many people hog the equipment. But a hotel is a little different. If there are a lot of people waiting to use the equipment, then using it for shorter time is good etiquette. If the person asked me kindly, I would have shortened my time to 30 minutes. But if they are being rude, then it would have made me stay on longer, lol! I try to get in early at hotels when most people don't use them. Sounds like you did fine.
