Society now encourages and praises one eating disorder while continuing to demonize another.

Anorexics are not encouraged to love the way they look as the obese are. Being Anorexic, Being Obese.... Both are eating disorders that need to be addressed. Both contribute to earlier deaths.

So why the difference.. It could be that with anorexia, death is more imminent... Yet with obesity, a person can go years before that heart attack hits.. before the fatty liver disease takes them down.... hypertension.. diabetes... both are prisoners suffering in their bodies...

and neither should be glorified...

I can't speak personally to anorexia, but neither should be glorified or humiliated. And it's so freaking easy to get rid of the excess pounds once the right tools are implemented, but that's for naught if the person isn't ready to change.

Agreed. Just like a drug addict or alcoholic.

My family has had their share of alcoholics which made me very careful of how I handled the stuff. Unfortunately, the family disease manifested itself as a sugar addiction in me. When I tried to discuss this with a doctor years ago she told me it couldn't be. I hope she's changed her mind by now because this addiction and obesity were killing me before I admitted to myself that things had to change. You're right, neither should be glorified, beautifully stated.

I have experienced both and it is very hard not to starve yourself when your thyroid burns out and you begin to gain weight. I feel for all people who struggle with these diseases. :(

My step-daughter posted this on facebook. Her mama has the same metabolism/body type. http://i.imgur.com/jEL4Wvb.jpg

AWWW so sorry. Society does weird things and as a whole doesn't understand. My heart goes out to anyone who is not healthy due to their weight.

I agree with you. It's all disordered eating.

TOTALLY agree! Both are just opposite ends of the spectrum, and as observers, we have no way of knowing what the root causes of their condition are. There are so many different diseases nowadays, and so many different types of disorders, it's sad. Neither should be shamed, and neither should be glorified. They should all just be loved.

So distorted and they push medications that contribute to weight gain and result in needing other medications. Sickens me watching famous athletes and stars do ads for drugs, McDonalds and Snickers. Bunch of sell outs.

Roobert,so true.

Florida, I could never see myself encouraging anyone to eat a McDonald's Burger. I don't have regular tv, so I don't see the commercials.. but I can't imagine any sincere fit athlete condoning the stuff... money money money...!!

I agree with ya Pickles about the fact that most overweight folks are overweight because they eat too much and exercise too little. But I hope no one would seek to assume that someone is so, and thereby judge them without knowing - which I think is where a lot of the "fat shaming" comes from. While it *may* be true, it may also be terribly, terribly wrong and unspeakably cruel for the person who truly is suffering from something beyond their control. That's why I said they should all just be loved -- EVERYONE needs to be loved. And much love to you, too! :D

ok, I deleted that comment so things wouldn't go down that road, but I was too late. :) Yes, there may be very rare instances when obesity is caused by medical conditions. But no one gets fat out of thin air. Just as no magical pill will make the fat shrink, no magical pill makes it grow. The vast majority of us are fat because we eat too much. I'm not going to get into a conversation about 'fat shaming.' It means different things to different people and to me is a total waste of time...

Consider, though, that there are people who are working on themselves (like on this very site). Some have lost quite a bit, but still have a ways to go - others have just started, and still have most of the way to go; but they're working on themselves and that (as you yourself said) takes time, "no magical pill will make the fat shrink".

No one gets fat out of thin air. We can make excuses or we can make goals.

Ain't that the truth, Healthyme! I also have a long way to go. My last milestone isn't until 2019 :P

I know I'm crazy but a little piece of me still hopes for a magic pill! I DO tend to be an optimist.....

LOL me too, Rckc.. there was a time when my doc prescribed some stuff for me... but I was so afraid of the side effects I didn't take them more than a couple times.... On my own, I used to be an ECA Stack JUNKIE!! OMG, that ephedra stuff really did me good. It was a capsule with Ephedra, Caffeine and Aspirin to really get me pumping for my workouts.. ...Solid.. but it was damaging my heart. I had to give it up... Many of us have our stories of how we 'used to be'.... and one hard part about getting back is just DOING IT... without any magic pills, without that 'motivation' that we wait for that often doesn't come... From the words of the great Nike... Just Do It! :P

oh oh oh.. One more... :P It all comes from within :P Do it!

I do miss the stuff... ECA Stacks were my magic pills...
