mskestrela's Journal, 29 September 2016

Well, today has been an expensive day. But, I'm finally caught up with property taxes. There was a huge FUBAR when I bought the house, which resulted in my property taxes being 3 times higher last year than the year before. I was not prepared for it, at all, and it's taken some time and saving to get them paid. Then I misplaced the *final notice* on the land tax, and just found it on Monday. I hadn't noticed the fine print in the corner that said if it wasn't paid in full before Oct. 8, the property would be put up for auction in November. Yeeps!!!! I guess my guardian angel was at work, because I've been feeling a sense of urgency to get it done. I also found my car license renewal form that should have been paid in June. I totally spaced on it. Guess what? There's a $25/month penalty attached, so it ended up costing me an extra $75! Lesson learned!
Now everything is paid up, the FUBAR has been resolved, and I just found out that the property tax on my car will go WAY down next year because it qualifies as a 'high mileage vehicle'. The bank account is pretty lean now, but having those matters cleared up is a huge weight off my shoulders.
I'll be switching my settings here to "Buddies Only" before bed tonight, and it'll stay that way until Monday morning, for reasons some of you know all too well.
Have a great weekend, everyone...stay on track!

Hi Mskestrela! Just passed by to record my snack before getting to my next task. I read your journal about your financial events; my heart goes out to you, and I am glad you have it solved/under control! Something similar happened to me 2 yrs ago. By the time the case escalated with an enormous bill to pay, I decided to reach out the property taxes office; I set an appointment with them and face to face I explained my situation again (in a nutshell, I had been hit by a serious case of ID theft and my important correspondence was not getting to my house.) I took with me proof of my ordeal, and I was more than thankful when I was told that they would review my case. It ended up that I was granted a refund for the overpaid bill. what a relief when I got a refund check! I am new at this site and do not know all the ropes yet, and obviously I am not aware yet about Buddies Only, so you might not even get this. I'm sorry if I am breaking some protocol here! Good luck!

No worries, nrr821. I sent you a PM. I'm glad you got your tax issues figured out! I won't be as lucky as you to get a refund, but at least next year's taxes will be back where they were 2 years ago. Whew!

Life can throw all kinds of curveballs. Glad you have these behind you. I noticed that the troll was focusing on you last weekend.

Thanks Sue and Rhontique. Yeah, he was trying really hard to get my goat. That's ok, I have a very well trained goat. LOL

Taxes are always a drag to pay, but I do appreciate schools, roads, fire and police and here in New England, we like our snow plows too. Working in Juvenile Justice as I do, trust me, you want a place for the violent ones to be off the streets. So, reluctantly, I pay my taxes.

@Erika, I don't mind paying them, it's just that last year threw me for a loop. I had planned for the same as the year before, but they were triple, because I had failed to register as a 'legal resident' of the county. The last time I bought, that was all taken care of in the closing, but since I paid cash for this place, the closing attorney didn't dot the i's or cross the t's. Add to that the fact that the previous owner "forgot" to send me one document that completed the transfer, and without it I couldn't register properly. It took from October to March to get all the paperwork in line! I live on a pretty tight budget, so saving up the money is a little-by-little affair. I had it all together in June, and was all set to pay it off on a Monday...the Sunday before that was when my Lenny cat had the aneurysm, and taking him to the emergency vet wiped out my savings and my checking accounts. I was left with $4....and a dead cat. *sigh* It's taken until now to save up enough to pay it off.

mkestrela -- years and years ago, when I bought my house, I was really on a shoe string, and I was budgeted down to the penny, My first year real estate taxes were $400. Year 2 was $4,000. I almost starved to death that second year. It was horrible, so I know exactly what you are feeling! (And I am very sorry about your dead cat. That must have been horrible.)

Thanks HM. We do the best we can, and hang in there through the ups and downs. Applies to the microcosm of dieting, as well as the macrocosm of life. Losing a 6-year-old fur baby so horribly was very hard. He was my best buddy, as well as my black cat, Jack's cuddle pillow. We both miss him every day.

I just went late on my car registration, and that was a $150 fine.

Nice to have those payments behind you. Now you can look forward to the future.

Thanks, Lynn.....but the new tax bill comes out next month, to be paid by the end of the year.....LOL! The good news is, this is my busy season, so I should be able to skim off enough to handle the lower rate. :)

Sorry if my comment sounded preachy. I do feel that deep sucking sound as the bank account gets drained by no-fun necessities. Then gets slowly refilled by the many trips to work.
