The Fat Acceptance Movement

Being overweight is dangerous. It isn't something that should be accepted. Simply because so many of us are overweight, it doesn't now make it acceptable. It's still dangerous. It isn't simply about looks. The fat is filling our insides, choking our organs, smothering our hearts and kidneys, causing health issues that otherwise wouldn't be a problem.

The only reason 'Fat Acceptance' should exist is to accept the fact that we're fat and do something about it to fix the problem. I see so many people who ask why they're not losing weight when they "never eat anything" and yet these are the same people who don't realize that they're lying to themselves when they eat a bag of Cheetos. Those who think they 'deserve' that pint of ice cream since they took a ten-minute walk.

Track Track Track.

Be honest with ourselves.

We are fat because of the choices we make... and that's what we have to accept.

Yes! Love it. The definition of gluttony - excessive eating. The vast majority of us are obese because we're gluttons and inactivity. That's the truth. No one gets fat out of thin air.

There is no denying that as I have lost weight people treat me better. They are nicer and more respectful. When I was quite fat, I was often demeaned in subtle and not so subtle ways. I would say that many people were hateful, which was painful and destructive to me. In our society it is still an acceptable prejudice that compounds the physical and psychological pain of being obese. Fat people deserve kindness and compassion, decency and dignity, just like everyone else. All of us here are all about taking control of our lives and our health to repair the damage of being overweight, so we know how hard it is to effect this change. We also know that not everyone is ready and able to do it. The addictive nature of food makes losing weight very challenging. I think the fat acceptance movement tries to address the problem of hatred. This is a good thing. I've never met an overweight person who doesn't know they need to lose weight. But should we be shunned and abused while we work on it? I appreciate some acceptance and kindness during this process. And at the same time, I do like it when people notice how far I've come toward a more normal weight. It's the same old Golden Rule and the compassionate loving-kindness we all need. Some amount of fat acceptance is a better alternative to fat shaming and fattie hatred and denigration.

@Draglist - I get you. I've become a documentary addict lately. One of them explained why the government, along with corporations, created 'the four food groups' and also the 'food pyramid' and the 'got milk?' campaign and many others. It's all about the money. Why do we drink milk? Because it's been burned into our minds that it's healthy, we need calcium, etc etc. But recently, I stopped drinking milk and have noticed a lot of intestinal issues disappear. Check out the website www.DocumentaryAddict.com in the 'Health' section when you're bored some day. Some really good stuff there.
