Colonoscopy Prep Day

Oh, boy! Well I kind of figured I'd be fasting on the liquid diet "prep day" but in fact I will be getting some 700 calories - of primarily sugar. I could have chosen the artificially sweetened prep kit but they used aspartame, and I don't choose that - ever. I love how you are instructed to take an overdose on one of the prep items, and also told to call the poison control center if an overdose occurs. This afternoon starts a period of PURGE-ATORY. Then I have to get up at 1 AM for more of the same, so I will be spending a lot of time with the porcelain goddess.

I would wish you something but with something like that what can you say? Anyway just know i am thinking about you.

I feel for you. Prepwork is worse than the actual procedure because you are put to sleep for that part. I think I would have gone with the sugar prep too. Wow, you really did put all of that into your diet journal! Well done! Who would have guessed it was 700 plus calories??? LOL!

I just did that, and kind of a waste of a day, but it has to be done. The prep is bad at best. Not as bad as my biopsy, but lengthy.

I've been dreading this and putting it off for awhile - so here I am at 66 having my first one when I "should" have already had 2. This dread of the whole business while I waited 2 months for an appointment has been part of my difficulty sticking to a diet. @NavymomT - clearly I felt the same way as you! However a friend of mine who put it off until 60 had hers (I was her driver) and she turned up with some cancer cells in a polyp. Fortunately it was stage 1 and no treatment is required, though she had to have a follow-up a few months later to be sure. (She is a slim person who eats healthy foods, too.) This friend had hers because her son's mother-in-law is battling colon cancer and it's a tough road. I too began to realize it is foolish to be worried about the colonoscopy as opposed to having cancer that is preventable.

I had my 1st colonoscopy at 30 and it's not as bad as I thought it would be. I have to go back every 5 years because my older sister has colon cancer. The worst part is the 'purgeatory'. Hang in there.

T64, You are completely right but i just hate to go to doctors. I was fussed at by my supervisor. She told me i was to start going to the doctor(s) to get my check ups since i will be a regular full time employee. Her words to me were "You now have Momma Jinna after you". So i promised her that in June when it is time for another "duck" visit, i will go.

@mom2boxers - yeah, I got curious about how much all this added up to, both calories and sugar grams. I am assuming I'm going to want all the bouillon and jello, and I have to have the Gatorade and poison. I love how the instructions say, "if you start to vomit slow down your rate of consumption of the Gatorade prep but you must finish it all." @warren, I guess you would have a similar prep for a prostate biopsy. So many medical procedures involve a degree of torture.

The prep is the worse thing. After that it it a piece of cake. I had my first one at 72 and it turned out fine. only one polyp and it was benign. Lucky me.

My sister in law has been fighting colon cancer for 15 years....first diagnosed when she was 43. She's going in for her 6th surgery in two weeks...as the cancer is back for the 4th time. A colonoscopy is a piece of cake compared to what she has endured.

The prep is the worse part. Good luck

Thank you everyone, for the support. It's just about 2 AM and I am finishing the last of the prep drink (1 qt in 1 hr). A few more toilet trips are inevitable but definitely on the downhill stretch. @dancingdeer - I am sorry for your SIL's struggle - we need a cure for cancer and soon!

Good for you to be proactive Trackin, even though maybe a bit late by your timetable...better this than finding out things aren't good the "hard way". Hoping and praying for a clean bill of health for you, take care!

Awww, shucks - Thank you Rains120! I'm baaaaack. Everything went fine with the colonscopy; slept through it all (including releasing the gas from the air they use), stumbled out of the place (people holding my arm) and went home and slept for 2 more hours. Still a bit stumbly but managed to get the garbage cans out. No polyps found so all is well. I lost nearly 5 lbs from the prep day, amazingly enough because I probably drank an equal weight in fluids with 3800 mgs sodium and several hundred carbs from sugar. While pleased to see a new low, I'm not posting it because it's bound to bounce back up some. If it's still low tomorrow, I will be happy to post it and I figure I surely "worked" for it and my toilet flushing mechanism did too. Thank you Mom2 and Steven for your kind thoughts!
