Fritzy 22's Journal, 10 May 2024

A few days ago I heard someone on TV talking about things to do to live longer. One of the things he said was to have more protein than carbs. I wondered how I could possibly do that. I don't eat much meat although I have been having chicken more often. I usually try for at least 60 grams of protein (more than enough for me per my doctor) and to keep carbs below 100 grams (took a break from that for a couple months). So I googled what can I eat that isn't meat that has more protein than carbs. Eggs, cheddar cheese (I snack on low fat mozzarella sticks which has the same amount of carbs and protein with half the calories), pumpkin seeds (another frequent snack), and Greek yogurt. I used to eat yogurt when all there was was Yoplait. I know I wouldn't like plain unsweetened yogurt. On my trip to the new Costco which I wrote about yesterday, I bought a box of Oikos triple zero yogurt. 18 servings so I better like it. 15 grams of protein and lower carbs. I ate it for the first time yesterday and it wasn't as sweet as the yogurt I buy once in awhile, but I'll get used to it. I now have some hard boiled eggs in the refrigerator. So for yesterday and what I plan to eat today carbs are in the 60's and that includes blackberries. Instead of 2 tablespoons of pumpkin seeds I've had 4. Protein has been around 70-80grams. It's motivating right now. Of course, the hot dog from Costco the other day ruined that day for carbs!

Thanks Morticia! I've never had macros like I've had the past 2 days! About 26% carbs, 44% fat and protein so.ewhere in between. Usually carbs are closer to 50% It makes sense to switch out 1/4 to 1/2 bagel to the Oikos triple zero yogurt with chopped nuts. I bought 2 packages of both bagels and English muffins because they were 1/2 price. Now I have to figure out when I can manage a tiny portion. I also bought orange pineapple juice and had to make all kinds of changes so I can drink a glass tomorrow

I buy that yogurt for my guy also at Costco…he likes it! I typically eat the 0% Fage yogurt, which isn’t great on its own, but I put a lot of berries and almond slivers on it. 😋 It is a good kick of protein!

try protein shake or cottage cheese

Thanks MrsQ - I enjoyed my 2nd yogurt yesterday more. Vanilla seemed a little sweeter than the strawberry. I love putting nuts in yogurt! I have sliced almonds that I also put in salads.

Thanks cstrutz! I've never been able to eat cottage cheese! Remember it as a kid. My mom would eat it with canned pears when she wanted to lose weight. I can't get past the texture or the taste. Wish I could. My doctor said no to protein powders, shakes, etc. They are highly processed and he wants me to avoid processed foods as much as possible. I do have a couple boxes protein bars and shakes that I will have once in awhile.

Fritzy, My Dr says same thing. My nutritionist has me eating 100 grams ofcarbs and 100-120 grams of protein . She would like it if I stayed on higher side of protein though. I eat Dannon Greek yogurt which is only 80 calories. I really like the cherry. I do but the plain as well and add a touch of honey and blueberries. I do occasionally eat cottage cheese but only once in awhile. Eggs are a go to for me. I also mix tuna with a bit of plain yogurt and chop about .33 of an apple in it and eat it just like that.

Diana, it was a new concept for me. I struggle to around 60 grams of protein. I do eat chicken and beef once in awhile but often have days with no meat. No protein shakes or other products. But looking up what nonmeat foods have more protein than carbs encouraged me since I do eat eggs and often have 2 tablespoons of pumpkin seeds (I've upped it to 4 tablespoons to give me a snack later in the day). If I ever get around to eating the hard boiled egg I'll have over 90 grams of protein! And carbs around 60. I did have a 2nd yogurt today because I am feeling hungry and really tired. I think I maybe under 1000 calories which is consistent with me doing IF. I did some weed whacking earlier and it wax really wzrm out and I was sweating. Maybe I'm because of dehydration, maybe the drastic reduction in carbs for me. I would never do Keto and see my doctor next werk. I'll ask him about 60 carbs a day. I know he said low fat is best for me with my hea!th issues. I hope you are feeling better and maybe even taking it easy.
