A LESSON ON SALT

When I started this journey, I eliminated ADDED salt from my diet. I eventually limited or eliminated heavily processed foods, eating much CLEANER. I saw a discussion on "How much sodium should I be taking in?". Most repsonses recommended keeping it around 2500 mg per day. So I decided I would check mine since I had never paid attention. Not surprisingly, I was averageing 1500 mg or less per day.

So I have been maintaining around 195-197 lbs for a few weeks now, but last night my daughter said "Dad, are you snacking too much? You look like you have gained some weight back." Now I knew that could not be as I still jump on the scale every now and then, even though not for an official weekly weigh-in. SO I went upstairs, jumped into my gym shorts and onto the scale ... 203! What the??? I know I was 197 the day before... what gives? I went to bed last night without my 20 ounce protein smoothie (which never causes me to run to the bathroom in the middle of the night). But last night I must have gone 6 times! I drank the same amount of water that I always do, so this was a mystery. This morning, I got on the scale AFTER breakfast... 198 lbs! Where did the 5 lbs go overnight?

AFter a little pondering I had my answer .... SALT! I had eaten my weekly chinese lunch yesterday, but I noticed the chef must have dropped the salt shaker in the shrimp lo mein, because it was VERY VERY SALTY. I forced it down becuase I had some place to be. Then for dinner I had leftover homemade chicken noodle soup from the night before, made with lots of chicken broth... MORE SALT! So, all that to say I validated what I already knew in my head... SALT makes you retain fluid... at least for little while. Another reason why we should not be weighing ourselves daily due to the fluctuations a little food change can make in one day.

yes - while the weight is temporary, sodium impacts what we see - and less added salt the better. good lesson to share. thanks.

It's amazing what clean eating will do for you. I still intake too much salt. I love pickles because they are zero calories, and I they work great when I have reached my 1200 caloric intake for my day. Since I tend to be still hungry at nite, sometimes.

I can attest to the fact I was stuck in a HORRIBLE plateau until I started really watching my salt, somedays are better than others, but I've found that I've really become more consistent with weigh-ins since then....

I've learned from counting calories on FatSecret about the huge amount of sodium that's in processed foods .

as far as weigh ins im on the scale morning noon and night and have noticed similar things i ate a bowl of canned clam chowder and noticed that i had gained about 4 lbs from it but then lost it back i was shocked to see 4lbs in one day but wondered whether it could have been salt also. there are a lot of mysteries about daily/hourly weight fluctuations that i still cant figure out. as far as the salt i think yes it causes water retention.
