I'm an American living in Asia. I've had some health problems that have prevented me from exercising for the last five years. I'm better now (mostly), but my sedentary job and lifestyle (not to mention middle age in general) have finally brought me to the point where I have to watch what I eat and create an exercise plan.

I haven't bought eggs for a long time, and the bananas here look awful lately, so I am submitting a list from what I bought yesterday:

2% milk (3.6 liters, a bit less than a gallon) 29元 = $4.08
Fuji apples (1斤, about a pound) 4.8元 = $0.67
1 cucumber 1.25元 = $0.17
1 summer squash 2.18元 = $0.31
1 bell pepper 1.5元 = $0.21

You can see why we eat a lot of vegetables.

I have no idea what gas costs, but taking a taxi downtown to the gym costs about 80元 ($11.25). If I go bike/subway/bus -- bus/subway/bike it's only about 7元 ($1), but it takes me an extra hour or two.

Walking Group
I used to wear my pedometer to make sure I didn't walk too much because I had severe back pain. Now I'm well, and trying to lose weight. I'm wearing a pedometer again to see how many steps I take a day. It's fun being able to walk, but it'll also be fun if/when I start to get in shape again!

Numb feet
I have trouble with the elliptical trainer because it seems like it's designed for someone about a foot taller than me. Someone should design one that's adjustable!

This is scary
Those are two very good points, sararay! Yesterday, counting calories, I let myself eat a lot more than I should have. I felt full and bloated at the end of the day. I knew the number of calories was technically "allowed", and I also knew that I was not following the healthy lifestyle changes of my first week.

Exercising to balance it out makes no difference. And I don't want to get to the point where I hate exercising. So far, it's still a treat, but it would be terrible if I viewed it as a punishment!

Just Wondering
I found the website because it was on a list of the Top Ten Websites of 2007 in Time or Newsweek magazine. (Sorry, I get the two confused, so I'm not sure which it was.)

I'd been wanting to track what I eat, and this site does that. The journals/support/exchange of ideas are proving to be more helpful than I'd expected.
