UPDATED BIO... I am now 39 years old, still a father of 2, married for 13 years and live in Michigan. I come from a family that struggles with weight so it is in my genetics I guess. at my heaviest I weighed 193 and I am only 5' 6" tall. this put me about 40 lbs over a healthy weight for my size. I have always been active up until about 9 years ago when the stress of life took over, this is when I gained most of my weight. I have decided its time for a change so I am on a warpath now to get back down to about 155 and get back in shape. I am currently using the low-carb way of eating as well as intermittent fasting and have had great results so far. Hoping to be down to my goal weight by June... that's when the boat comes out and the shirt comes off!

ALCOHOL...
I agree with Bill, it is easy to start snacking while drinking especially at a social event where snack foods are usually out for everyone. this is where some will power needs to come in, I just tell myself if I want the beer I need to stay away from the snacks, that or have a snack but avoid the beer. it's not easy but it can be done!!

ALCOHOL...
I am also a beer drinker and blame most of my weight gain on beer... when I began to "diet" this past February I cut out all alcohol for the first 2 months, I dropped just over 10 lbs and started having a beer or 2 on the weekends. I went to the Miller 64 because i thought it still tasted like beer but only had 64 calories. since I have re introduced beer into my diet I have still been able to lose about 1 - 2 pounds per week. the key is to not overdo it and also to plan accordingly. if I know I am going to have a few on Friday I will plan to eat a little lighter throughout the day however still having a full dinner so to not drink on an empty stomach. has worked so far!!

Counting Calories
I have always been told that in order to lose weight you must consume less calories than you burn in a day... however, I have also read that consuming too little calories can cause your body to think it is starving and it will hold onto any fat it may have possibly burning your muscle instead as a source of energy, therefore losing muscle mass but still holding onto the fat you are trying to lose. this is where you see those "skinny fat" people who might show a low number on the scale but do not look toned at all and are in horrible health... even though their weight is low they starve themselves to get that scale number low and this is the outcome. the goal is to determine how many calories you burn in a day depending on your activity level, then adjusting your diet to be less than those burned but not a huge number and making sure the calories you do eat are the right macro nutrients... lean meats, fruits, vegetables, any whole foods basically, just stay away from processed!
