Atkins..i'm trying really trying, but if i have to eat another egg or piece of meat i'm going to bar
But the REAL issue I have is NOT that you won't lose weight, and by the way, ANY weight loss will ALWAYS be positive for your lipid profile, but the fact that Atkins requires and recommends you to take multi-vitamin supplements because the diet lacks the full regimen of nutrition you can get from eating normally and healthfully, is and should be a warning shot. Just because you lose weight it doesn't mean it's good for you. Just because your doctor recommended it, it doesn't mean it's healthy. I've seen and heard doctors recommend and prescribe some of the most asinine remedies; they are not gods.
Atkins lacks potassium and many of the highly nutritious phytochemicals that you will deny yourself by following this weight loss program. you need to supplement. Isn't being healthy really about eating a varied, highly nutritious diet and moving your body on a regular basis both aerobically and anaerobically? If you are eating right you don't NEED to supplement.
Why should a diet make you feel tired? Working out makes me feel tired, not eating healthfully...
This diet IS a diuretic. We all eat certain foods that are diuretics but Atkins is TOTALLY a diuretic and is therefore quite hard on your kidneys, here's a quote from the FAQ at everythingatkins.net
"During Induction, Atkins has a strong diuretic effect , which means you will lose a large amount of water weight, along with electrolytes, which contain the minerals potassium, magnesium and calcium. This is what causes the leg cramps. The best way to replace these is to salt your food to taste and take a mineral supplement that includes calcium, magnesium and potassium."
hmmm.....
How about the psyllium husk recommendation?
We need to drink fiber in a glass of water because the diet doesn't adequately provide it and this is good because ....
For me, it's not ALL about the bathroom scale, it's about good health. Any diet that loses weight for us is a good one, so why not choose the most healthful one. The one that doesn't require supplemental band-aids to limit the side effects. Just eat a rich variety of densely nutritious foods and get our butts in the gym and work hard to be fit and well. Atkins is not a healthful lifestyle choice as long as it restricts what you can and can not eat and excludes certain food groups that provide us with so many essential nutrients that protect us from disease. As long as a diet requires you to supplement to achieve the necessary level of vitamins and minerals the surely it is lacking period.
Again, just my 2 cent worth ...

I honestly believe these diets, Atkins etc, are dangerous. I truly believed in them too for a while, I couldn't believe I could eat all this great stuff and lose weight at the same time, until I started to get kidney stones (kidney problems are a known side effect of high protein diets) and then I found that I missed certain foods and ended up craving them and then ultimately eating them again. Of course back came the weight too.
I am mostly vegetarian now, because I believe that good eating habits are not just about portion control and moderation, although obviously that is HUGE, but it's also about quality nutrition and I think we all know that virtually all of the vitamins and minerals our bodies need are in the phytochemicals found in fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes etc and NOT in meats. One can make an argument for vitamin B12 but not a whole lot else. So for me I needed to get off these fad diets, because ultimately they don't work because you simply can't adopt them as a lifestyle. Eventually you want some carbs and you pile the weight back on. They also don't work because they are unhealthy. Incidentally, I threw away my Lipitor as the change in my diet NATURALLY reduced my cholesterol from a stubborn 255 to a steady 160. My doctor was bowled over.
We need to find a way to lose the weight by adopting a new way of eating, moderation, lots of exercise, a balanced healthy NUTRITIOUS diet and making all the right choices. We KNOW what to do, there aren't any shortcuts. It's always a challenge; our diets shouldn't be something we "go on" but a lifestyle choice we make that we can maintain for the long run and keeps us healthy and well.
Calories in, calories out, good nutrition, plenty of exercise, everything in moderation. It's easy really it's us that make it difficult.
Just my 2 cents worth. Good luck everyone ...

How about we just consume less calories than we expend. It's a novel idea and one, if adopted as a lifestyle we can surely maintain. I look at some of these extreme diets and say to myself, if I can't keep this up for the long haul then I will fall off and put back on a ton of weight. Does that ring a bell with anyone here? A Balanced, healthy diet, full of fruit and vegetables (preferably fresh) watching my intake of saturated fats and sugars in tandem with regular exercise both aerobic and anaerobic is something you can keep doing forever. You can have anything you want in moderation but as long as you expend more than you consume, you will keep off the weight and stay with the program. I yo-yo dieted for too long, this doesn't just work but more importantly, it's something I can live with. Good luck
