I am a 31 year old woman (32 in April) with four children. I currently go to school full time and will finish my BA in anthropology in June. I plan to start a graduate program for public health in Spring. I have autoimmune thyroid disease (diagnosed at 21) and have struggled with weight since diagnoses. At the time of typing this I am at my heaviest weight ever - just at 200 lbs. I do not wish to enter a school of public health still being obese. It is crucially important to me to set a good example for those I aim to help.

I need friends!
Hey, I'll be your friend! : ) We're at around the same place. I would like to eventually get to the same same goal weight as well, but I decided to change my ticker in 10 lb goal increments. It makes me feel better to see 10 lbs to go instead of 60-something! What kind of diet are you using? I recently saw a nutritionist for the first time when I toppled over the 200 mark. She put me on a 1500 calorie diet - spread out over 6 small meals. I have to eat within an hour of waking up and going to bed to keep my metabolism stable. So far, so good. I lost 2.5 lbs this first week which has been super motivating and the diet hasn't been painful at all. I feel really full all day if I keep grazing like I'm supposed to.

Can someone help me with setting the right BMR on here?
I'm trying to figure out how to make the calories spent resting and sleeping right for my BMR. I know that mine is (or is supposed to be) 1700 even. The automatic settings are WAY over that. Something like 1500 resting and 700 sleeping. I already figured out how to adjust the RDI. Can anyone help?

What to do when your kids are obese??
I am a mom of 4 kids between the ages of 2 to 10. None of my children are overweight, but I think that has a lot to do with both genetics and parenting choices. I honestly see tech gadgets as one of the two main saboteurs of child health (the other being processed food).

A standing rule in our home is NO television or video games on school nights. Period. One may read, play board games or play outside. They usually choose to play outside until dinner time and then read after dinner. This may seem harsh to some, but once habits are broken, no one seems to notice they ever existed. There is no reason that TV and video games have to be more than an occasional treat. Most of the planet lives without having them at all or on a VERY limited basis. Playing outside really is great, natural exercise for kids. We have a large, enclosed trampoline that it's hard to pry my kids away from. Jumping on it is a great calorie burner.

Another huge enemy is processed food, but it sounds like you know that and are working hard on making some great meals. Maybe start to turn your concentration toward portion control. Kid's don't have to have a perfect diet, but they don't need to overeat either. If they constantly complain of hunger, give them a big glass of water. Most people will start to feel "hungry" when they are in need of fluids. Remember - no juice or other sugary drinks. Why drink your calories, you know? If you battle water consumption with your kids, try buying stevia in powdered form and making kool-aid with it. It might take them a few tries to get used to the taste of stevia, but they will. My kids really don't notice the difference. You might also try keeping a pitcher in the fridge of water with lemon, orange or cucumber slices in it for a little flavor. Very refreshing in the summer. Also, sugar free popsicles. Those are a "free" food that most kids enjoy and make them feel like they are getting a treat. Another warm weather, healthy treat that is easy for mom is frozen yogurt in a tube. I buy organic yogurt in a tube (like Gogurt, but I feel better about Horizon or Stoneyfield Farms)and just put it in the freezer. Kids love that and it's an easy, inexpensive and healthy snack.
