I turn 65 on May 1st this year. I've been diabetic for over 10 years now, but have chosen to ignore it, that is until close to 2 years ago. I was in hospital for a big 9-hour operation to clear blood clots out of my lungs and heart. I only had an 80% chance of surviving. I did. I'm grateful.

In recovery I bashed my foot and ended up losing a toe. It was painful and horribly emotional. When I finally came home Fall of 2016 I weighed more than 300 lbs. I couldn't even climb the stairs to get to the bathroom or bedroom. Talk about embarrassing. My husband helped me lose weight - 70 lbs in 3 months! I know he didn't know what he was doing, but I was grateful nonetheless because he unwittingly dropped me down to a pre-diabetic state.

I have been pre-diabetic now for one year and have slowly begun putting weight back on. It's time to take control, lose the weight and come off the Metformin again. I have been reading about Low Carb High Fat diets - the scientific view - and the history of diet and nutrition and how we ended up a diabetic mess of a nation. It all makes sense to me, so that's the plan I'll go with.
