Sugar + White Flour=Death
Boy, oh boy can I relate to the sugar addicts among us! I find that ANYTHING w/sugar (white processed cane sugar) or white flour can, in enough amounts, start the cravings in me. Because I'm a recovering addict (clean 6.5 years!!!) I am self-aware enough to know that FOOD was my drug of choice for many years. I had a gastric bypass @ 25 y/o and lost 140 pounds. (From 295!) Gained 30 after the kids (3 boys/10 pounds apiece) but maintained my weight for over 20 years...UNTIL my husband died. Over 3 years I packed on 50-60 pounds and am only now getting rid of it.
I follow a "no-sugar-no-white-flour" low carb diet. Kind of like a modified Atkins/South Beach. It is a rare day that I will consume more than 50 g of carbohydrates, and most of the time keep it below 30. I will eat strawberries and no sugar Cool-Whip, and every afternoon I make a HUGE dark greens salad with tons of cucumbers and spinach and turkey...and have the "full-fat" Caesar dressing. I put a TBSP of dried cranberries on it, but everything else is seeds or vaggies w/only a cherry tomato or two.
I find, for me, that if I maintain a high protein amount (I love GNC protein shakes & consume at least one/day) with some healthy fats, I stay "feeling full". Then, when the temptations come, I'm better able to pass them by.
I became a widow in 2008...and now met a wonderful, godly man and will be married next month! So...wanting to look pretty in my wedding dress is good motivation, though I don't plan to stop afterwards.
