Updated 1/1/23: I am 81 years old, have been married for 61 years, and live in the Los Angeles area in our home for 52 years. I have yo-yo dieted my entire adult life, even gaining up to 5 sizes one year, and then losing it the next. Although when I started here at around 118 my weight was fine, I needed this for health: mental as well as physical. I live a high-stress life and have a very bad back. Even when I am binging I still do Intermittent Fasting 16/8 about 99% of the time and this is what has kept me at a reasonable weight. My name should be yo-yo. My 86-year-old husband has heart failure, COPD, kidney disease, and uses oxygen and a c-pap. Our 2 adult children have passed, the most recently our lovely daughter died 2 months ago of cancer. My husband is becoming continually more abusive but can't live alone so my intention is to take care of him as long as I can. If you had a disabled child wouldn't you do everything you could to care for them? Few understand my commitment. He will die if put in jail or a "home". The only way he would stay in a "home" is to be drugged and tied down. That's what they did in the hospital. He would go mad, I would. We have a small cabin in the mountains so do not qualify for Medicaid anyway.

Never feeling satisfied without sugar or carbs.
I used to be that way and ate a lot of salads or vegetables to fill my stomach. But I was still always hungry and would fall "off the wagon" eventually. Or I would put up with the hunger to be "trim". It's lousy going to bed hungry. I told one friend I was trying to "make friends" with hunger. She is tiny, and said she really liked that idea, so I realized she too lives hungry. May I please tell you that with the carbs I ruined my health. In 2018 it took me eight months to lose 8 lbs. Now I am learning another way, and starting to rebuild my health, and I can be trim also. Watch Dr. Berg and Dr Jason Fung on YouTube. That is your best start, even though you may not believe it at first. Otherwise if you aren't diabetic yet, you will be. And believe you me, you haven't seen hunger until you are on insulin. You can turn this around. You want to talk more? Or you want to turn me off?

Calories per day ????
What you eat is important too. I'm new here and learning from Youtube. I've always given up sweets when I dieted but wasn't willing to give up bread. After reading how much wheat changed the last 100 years, and how some fats are really good for you as long as they aren't combined with grains, I'm going with Keto, even though it may take me a long time to adapt. I finally am pre-diabetic with sky high BP, and lots of health problems so am shortening my daily eating window for health results, called Intermittent Fasting. Dr. Berg and Dr Jason Fung are wonderful on Youtube. I rarely eat as many calories as this site suggest if I want to lose or maintain.

Thanks for the info
liv001, Gosh, it must have been from you that I found the info about dietitian Joy Kiddie. I was reading several members journals and pasted the info into Open Office but didn't put in where I had seen it. I spent a while looking around to find it because I wanted to give you credit. You bring us much good information and I appreciate it, along with you reaching out to so many people. I really admire that! Happy New Year.

New Here
Welcome EleanorRiley, I just joined myself and really like this site, to be able to put in my food and find out the amount of fat and carbs. I have had trouble getting the "net" carbs to work, but I can live with that. Reading about other people and their work at getting healthier and losing weight help keep me focused on my eating choices. I am going Keto but am just getting used to it. I believe this will be my last and healthest plan I have ever been on. My brain was getting "mushy" and I got scared. It's better already with Intermittent Fasting and Keto. Drs Berg and Jason Fung are very informative. Wishing you well, and Happy New Year. I believe this can be your best year ever.
