I am a computer programmer that does MIS work for a mortgage company. Since I've got a sedentary job it is really hard to get any exercise in during the day.

I'm married to a beautiful woman and have two kids, a boy and a girl. The main reason that I've joined this site is to help me lose weight so that I can enjoy them more. I'd like to have more energy and not get winded/headache every time I play rough with my kids.

I've always been large and believe that I have the largest "frame" in my family. I have 6 siblings with 2 of them being brothers, one skinny and the other like me but not as heavy. Since there's a skinny guy in there I believe that I can trim down as well, but it will take some hard work on my part.

That's why I'm here. Wish me luck.

Shoes for beginning overweight runners?
I agree with Diablo360x. I can tell you that since I started wearing my Vibrams (KSO Trek), daily for over a year now, I have not had any knee problems like I did before them. My ankles don't turn, and I don't pronate or have plantar fascitis (spelling?) either. I didn't start running in them until a couple months ago, when I started my real weight loss journey, and I couldn't be happier. Barefoot running is definitely the way to go.

Am I walking/running wrong?
When I've had this problem in the past it was due to shin splints. I'd read up on that some. I would have to stop running until the pain went away.

It could also be how you are running. For me, it was because I was running on my toes 100% of the time to get a faster time. That was 10 years ago. Now, I've started running daily, which I've never done before, and I use barefoot shoes (Vibram FiveFingers), and run on the mid- to fore- (ball) of my feet. I don't have shin splints anymore, probably due to my bones thickening from 10 years ago, but I have to keep constant attention to my calf and achilles. If there's even the slightest twinge, I let up on my pace. I've already sprained (probably tore a little) one calf because I didn't.

So, no matter what shoe you get and what stride you use, make sure you monitor yourself. If you have pain, that's your body's way of saying slow down, or even stop, in my opinion. Eventually, as your body adjusts the pain will stop, but you have to give your body that time by resting a day or more between runs.
