This picture is from about 2005. It was taken during a 50 mile bike ride in Sherman, TX. I weighed about 195 to 200 at that point and was bound and determined to prove that you could be fat and fit. Curiously, I weighed about the same in late January 2021 when I once again started trying to lose weight.

I went on my first diet in 1961 at the beginning of fifth grade when I weighed 155 lbs. The school nurse told my mother I was too fat. For school lunch I got carrot and celery sticks and skim milk that had to be special ordered just for us fat kids. I also weighed 155 at the beginning of seventh grade and was not quite 5 feet tall. Somehow through 6 years of yo-yo dieting and the intermittent use of diet pills (sarcastic thanks to our family doctor) I somehow managed to weigh 155 (at 5 ft 2 in) when I finished high school. My weight started to escalate after starting a family. Max (non-pregnant) was around 240. I have had years where I stayed in the 170's. In my mid 50's took in an older relative and I provided her primary care for 10 years and gradually moved back on up to 220 due to stress and fatigue eating. Most recently I have been in the 190's.

All these 60 years I have been on and off weight loss diets. Most of this time I generally ate a pretty balanced diet - except when stressed or overly fatigued, when I would eat too many refined carb foods. I always tried to be active by walking, gardening, taking aerobic dance classes and in my 50's I got real into bicycling and would ride 10 - 15 miles in the morning before work (while weighing in the 190's).

I turned 70 in August 2021 and do not want to be disabled for the last part of my life due to obesity and a sedentary lifestyle. Being retired, I finally have the time to devote my attention and energy to working on my own health. So I guess I will take the old Nike advice and just do it.
