Hi!

I am training for my third 1/2 marathon...the first one was 25 years ago and the second one was in Oct 2010. What foods do you find that give you the energy you want without too many calories and without stomach upset? I usually go with oatmeal and a banana, but would love more ideas!
Thankks, Erika

I was already to write oatmeal and bananas. You might also try 1/2 bagel or english muffin w/ a little peanut butter and half of a banana. I also drizzle a litle honey too Smile
If it is a short run 3-5 miles, I sometimes hava a packet of banana hammer gel or Vanilla Gu.
Good Luck!

One of the intended training gains of the long run is to train your body to burn fat verse sugars for energy. If your long run is first thing in the morning, then yes, 200-300 calories to refuel after you fasted while you slept would be in order. Oatmeal and Yogurt is my go to refuel. I top my oatmeal with walnuts to add some protein and good fat. If your long run is in the afternoon after you have started your normal meal plan adding extra calorie intake pre-run may actually be counter productive. On the long run, you should be taking it slow and easy. Long runs are about quantity, not quality. Burning lots of calories during an hour or two slow run. Refueling before a tempo run is a different story Tempo runs are about quality not quantity.

Great info Keith. I try to do my long runs in the morning. What is your recommendation before a tempo run?

A few clementines is my Fav. Before a Tempo run is also one of the few times I will drink Fruit juice.

Fruit juices seem to be a polerizing topic. runnerkeith, it sounds like you fall mostly in the avoid juice camp. I'm currently on the fence, so if you don't mind me asking, why avoid juice? Isn't it supposed to be good for you?

Alot of juices are spiked with refined sugars and salt by the manufactures. True fruit and vegetable juices without additives such as sugars, salts and preservatives are good for you. How do you feel about adding a medium sized apple, a tablespoon of High Fruitose corn syrup and a 1/4 teaspoon of salt to your afternoon snack?

I live for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches before any run over 10 miles! It's like my "treat" for going that far... I usually eat it about 30 minutes before I hit the road... then its about GUs after mile 10.
