For as long as you consider yourself "on a diet", keep up your food journal. It's way too easy to miscalculate your intake in your head. You are your own worst enemy. Always size up meals before you eat so you can accurately account for the calories in them. None of the other tips here will work if you're deceiving yourself about your intake.

I beleive this tip applies in maintenance phase as well. It doesn't take long to veer far from the your goal weight.
