Healthy Diabetic Life

I try to follow a relatively low carb and low fat diet. I stay away from foods such as crisps, potatoes, pasta, white rice and sweets. I make sure that I get my 5 a day and eat meals that will fill me up (doesn't take much). My sources of protein come from fish and low fat cheese. I prefer drinking almond milk as it has a nutty flavour. I love porridge (but with water rather than milk) and wholemeal toast. I like adding cayenne pepper to vegetables as it gives heat and also cinnamon to porridge. I prefer this to adding butter to veg and sugar to porridge. Overall I am trying to have control of my diabetes and this way of eating seems to work for me as I am not constantly hungry, I don't crave sugary foods and I feel better about myself because of it. Even though I never eat more than 1400 calories a day, I don't feel starved.

How To Follow Healthy Diabetic Life:

Eat foods that fill you up, low GI foods are great for this. Try and stay away from foods that are full of chemicals, additives and are processed as you can't be sure what is put into them and therefore what you are putting into your body. Weighing out foods is a great help for me as I know the carbs and fat that I am then eating. I'm not as bothered about the calories as the food I eat is healthy, doesn't have vast amounts of calories in them and I never go hungry as they fill me up.

About / History

this way of eating started at the start of 2013 as at the end of 2012 I was very unwell due to bad eating habits which resulted in my diabetes being all over the place. I felt terrible all of the time, I had no energy and was very moody. I decided that I needed to gain control by eating better and that would mean that I would feel better and generally healthier
