jeannieselby's Journal, 04 April 2018

Yesterday was horrendous, so I'm not freaking out about a red arrow! Since I've been on chemo, I've primarily limited my driving to work and Dr's appointments only. First due to my not being sure how quickly I'll run out of energy, nor how quickly I can react to the morons on the road in my manual transmission Jeep Patriot.

So I left home at 8:28 am for my 9 am Allergist appointment (only 6.5 miles from home in rush hour). Had to pull the out the "Bitch" card after sitting in their lobby for an hour waiting for this "consultation" that I would be leaving soon for my 10:45 appointment with my Oncologist (only 3.5 miles from his office). Dr. saw me 8 minutes later, but despite my repeating that I would be leaving his office by 10:30, still set me up with a nurse to do some tests. I got her to fit me into their schedule for later in the afternoon, since I had 3 more other appointments already scheduled back to back. Got to Oncologist and had to park half way up in the parking garage as there were no handicapped spaces available. Whew! Out of breath and certain I was going to fall down with every step, but I made it! Had to wait 30 minutes to meet with my "cheerleader", and then rush through all of my questions, cause I needed to leave her office on time in order to get to my 12:30 appointment with my Primary Care Dr (9.6 miles back towards my home!). As expected this appointment ran late because I needed blood work (NO they couldn't do the blood work that Allergist needed me to get done that has to be done somewhere else!) So my next appointment is getting my taxes done way out in Tolleson 18 miles away! I'm only 30 minutes late, which is amazing despite an accident on the freeway! I know I'm going to be a quicky, cause I only have 1 job, and I'm not itemizing! Now I hadn't eaten all day, so I made a dash through the Burger King drive thru, before I get back on the road, in order to get back to the Allergist office to do the damn tests at 2:30 (which is now 19.5 miles from where I am) Don't ask me how but I got there at 2:37! The receptionist is shocked because I made it back. The nurse has me in for testing within 5 minutes. We're through in just under an hour, BUT I haven't had the blood work done yet, so now I've got to find a lab that's still open! Guess what; the nearest one is only 4.6 miles away, and despite yet another accident blocking an entire intersection, I made it with 13 minutes to spare before they stopped accepting walk ins. I can finally go home! It's 10 miles away in rush hour AGAIN, but I was ever so glad to get there. So that's how I spent my day off! Fun fun, joy, joy, and I ain't complaining about no stinking red arrow!

I am so sorry you had to go through that. I have to admit that it gave me a chuckle the way You described the events. Deep breath and you deserve a class of wine.

This would be a good meditation day. I have a series of Yoga I can sometimes use after a day like that. May you find peace and healing.

Bless you! I would always ask for my appointments to be back to back because my cancer center was 2 hours and 15 minutes away & my PS was half an hour less on the same interstate. I’d run late so many times! Now I allow an extra half an hour to an hour between. Hate sitting around if they are on schedule but I’ve been asked to reschedule when I’ve been late and that’s not an option for a stay at home Mom with 2 kids in different schools and a 3 yr old at home. I’ve learned to advocate for myself and tell them what time I need an appt. if they want me in soon they’ll find an appt or we can wait a week or two. Chemo was hard because they constantly changed the time and I couldn’t just leave my kids at home alone (then 7&10) to get up and on the bus. Made me tired just reading your post! Drs constantly told me to slow down but I was/am like you. Get it done because I have other stuff to do and more time at once later to rest :). If there is a message function feel free to message me if you want to talk to someone who has been there. (TNBC here)
