Hm ... I posted to my journal last evening but it doesn't appear here.

I'm back after a 90-day hiatus. I had foot surgery (extensive R foot reconstruction after 25 years of diabetic neuropathy resulted in Charcot foot) on 01/02 and the healing is progressing well. I've been in a cast since then, and got a walking cast on 02/14. My orthopedic surgeon is pleased with my progress. I've very relieved!

I got bored sitting in my recliner for weeks on end and, once I was able to drive again, I began to binge on ice cream, cookies, chocolate, and doughnuts. My blood sugar reached 400+ mg/dL one day last week despite increasing doses of insulin. That did make me sit up and take notice.

Well, all right! I estimated that I'd gained 15 pounds in the last few months, but it's only 11.5 pounds, and that includes the weight of my fibreglas-and-gauze cast. On to my food diary...

Okay, I've got my day planned. I had a little turkey at 5:00 a.m., when I fed my dog. (His meal schedule rules our lives!) As a night owl, now that I'm retired, I actually rise for the day between 9:30-10:00 a.m., so my "breakfast" is usually split between that 5:00 a.m. nosh and then coffee, with the daily crossword puzzle, later. When I got up today, my BS was only 77 mg/dL, so I had a tablespoon of raw honey.

My lunch included 6 oz. of raspberries that I love and couldn't bear to waste. Having Cool Whip on berries is my nod to a "sweet treat."

I also drink at least 64 oz. of water daily, with meals and in between. I keep a full glass in the living room and a 64-oz. jug in my little office/retreat. I've completely dropped diet soda.
222.0 lb Lost so far: 63.0 lb.    Still to go: 54.0 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.

I saw you had a group post, and I responded to it. Glad to see you back and that the surgery was done and you are healing. I was worried about you when you stopped posting. When you get the cast off you'll show a big 1 day loss! Your last comment about drinking 64 oz of water daily motivated me to drink more water today. I usually have a 12 oz glass that I drink out of all day. But it's usually more diet soda and crystal lite than water. So I've had 3 glasses of water after reading what you said - 36 ounces. Don't think I'll have much more, maybe another glass but I am trying. I can drop the diet sodas just yet, but will focus on it once I reach my ultimate weight goal.

Hi, Fritzy22! On the waterfront (LOL), I don't keep any diet soda or Crystal Lite in the house anymore, even though I liked them both. Tonight, I found myself wishing for a diet cola and then remembered that I had cleaned up a bunch of fresh strawberries. Filled me up, and helped my craving for something sweet. I keep a 12-oz. glass next to my spot on the couch and a 64-oz. Rubbermade pitcher and glass next to my recliner, where I just about live. I'm constantly sipping. I find that a lot easier than trying to down a full glass of water at a time, and refilling the pitcher is reinforcement, since I proudly refill it every day.

Meant to add, too, that I didn't quite buy into the whole "diet sweeteners make you fat" shtick, but I did want to reduce my taste/craving for extra-sweet things. That's why I gave up the artificially sweetened drinks.

It's great to have you back and to find that you are doing well. I gain a lot from your posting and have missed you. Don't put much thought into any weight gain. You're truly disciplined and it will fall off of you quick enough. Discipline seems to be my present barrier. I'm having trouble getting over the hump and back to losing weight.

Pat - I'm hoping to give up the diet soda and any Crystal lite by the end of April. Have all of my to not have any of it in my system, then I have blood tests done sometime in June. Hope the inflammation is better, the diet drinks don't help with that, but they do help me stay dieting.
