Phase II - Reduction

Nephrology appointment today: Mildly elevated creatinine levels due to normal aging (atherosclerotic etiology), but no diabetic damage to my kidneys! Fantastic! Very relieved!

My body has changed drastically since I was 19, and not just because my weight went from 148 (height 69.5", BMI 21.5) to 285 (BMI 42.39) by the time I was 45. I've also shrunk three-quarters of an inch over my adulthood, to 68.75", generally a normal change due to dessication of the discs in the spine.

I've always been fairly sedentary but, till my mid 30s, I could do situps with ease (100 at a time, in my late 20s) and my legs were my best feature -- slim and shapely. However, since retiring almost 9 years ago, I've lost a lot of muscle mass and tone in my calves, I can't do *one* situp due to loss of muscle tone and strength, and my rear end (never prominent) has sagged into non-existence! I still carry most of the excess fat in the torso (back, chest, midrift, belly, hips).

I last weighed 180 pounds at age 32, and my body was shaped much the way it is now. I'd hovered around 230 for at least 10 years, and my current BMI (height 68.75") is just over 32. My goal is 168 (a BMI of <25).

I'm determined, this time and with the help of my co-dieter husband, to change my eating style from a lifetime of sugar and chocolate addiction. So far, so good -- two weeks in.

It'll be interesting to compare pictures of myself at 180 pounds, then at age 32 and now at age 63, to see how much (and where) my body shape has changed. Improving and maintaining my health has become more important than appearance, but I still want to look and feel a lot better in my clothes! The good thing about aging is that my expectations are lower -- because they're more realistic!
