Sweet. I stay in the obese category even at 190

Yep, me too. Even if I was at my goal weight, I'd still be in the obese category. My body just isn't designed to be under 160 lbs. but I don't let the category bother me. My regular check ups and blood work confirm that I'm healthy.

Well when I hit 180 I'll just be in the "overweight" category. .. to just squeak into the "normal" category I'd have to be 144. I used to feel really good at 160. so I figured a kind of compromise would be the 150 goal. .... and ya I know it's just some stupid app on my phone. I never got a dr to actually measure my body fat or anything. I just use it as a guidline to help me understand where I am in the process.

BMI is really a joke in my eyes. You should be at a place you feel comfortable at and also have healthy blood work. I know long ago when I lost weight, people started saying I looked like a cancer patient when I was 165lbs. My BMI says I need to be at 145lbs, lmao. 180lbs will be my weight that I will someday stay at and be happy with.

I was super duper happy too when I reach obese and moved outta morbidly obese.. now id just like to be "overweight" bwahahaha

When I moved out of the obese category into the normal, two things happened: my stomach flattened out and my dress size dipped into the single digits. Take heart; normal seems almost too far away to be possible, but your hard work is already pushing you in the right direction.

The only two numbers that matter....Weight and Body Fat %. If you have a woman that is 5'4" and 100 lbs...she may be a low body fat %, but she's also anorexic. Now take that same woman and put 20 lbs on her with the same body fat %, now you're healthy and strong.

Well ya its not a super accurate guideline.. but even then not having the label of MORBIDLY obese is pretty nice..............................................................................Main Entry: morbid Part of Speech: adjective Definition: gloomy, nasty, sickly Synonyms: aberrant, abnormal, ailing, brooding, dark, deadly, depressed, despondent, diseased, dreadful, frightful, ghastly, ghoulish, grim, grisly, gruesome, hideous, horrid, infected, irascible, macabre, malignant, melancholy, monstrous, moody, pessimistic, saturnine, sick, somber, sullen, unhealthy, unnatural, unsound, unusual, unwholesome....... so essentially I'm not in the hideously obese category anymore... so inaccurate or not I'm pretty happy about it.

By my doctor, everyone must be obese. The scales are ridiculous!

Great job! I was too at 255lbs @5'8 in November. The bmi calculators i think are too strict and unreasonable.

Just so happens a wrote a quick guide on how to determine your "ideal" weight based on your frame/skeletal size. I've never seen a fat skeleton, however the size and density of a skeletal frame changes, and not just in terms of length. Saying that someone who is 5'5" should weigh 130 lbs does not take into account whether their skeletal frame is small and slender or much larger. The larger your skeletal frame, the larger you will be at a "natural" weight. Measure your wrist with a tape measure just above the wrist towards the elbow, NOT below the wrist at the base of the thumb. Wrap the tape and take the reading. At 5'5", Small = < 6.25", Medium = 6.25" = 6.5", Large = > 6.5". Once you have your S/M/L category, your ideal weight range is 124/130/139 lbs. So as you can see, between Small @ 124 lbs, and Large @ 139 lbs, there is a 15 lb difference. Now imagine how many women are beating themselves up over weighing 140 lbs at 5'5" with there German DNA, vs their small petite Asian friend with a Small frame weighing 130 lbs? The woman with the Large frame is only 1 lb from her ideal, while the Small frame woman is 6 lbs from her ideal. I think I'll write journal on it...assign it as homework to people :-)

dang, that puts my ideal weight even lower than I thought...

@mahjohn, I just checked through your journals and couldn't find a post dealing with ideal weight based off of wrist size/height; I'm interested.. How does that vary as well for someone who lifts? Does it scale?
