heidij123's Journal, 30 August 2015

Friday after a fast day was 166.1, yesterday after a feast day was 167.5 (I ate out in the evening, there may have been more salt in the food than I thought, so water retention?), today after a fairly low-cal day is 166.9 ( possibly still holding onto some sodium and water?). Anyway, interesting how it's jumping around!

What you do is: (166.1 + 167.5 + 166.9) / 3 = 166.83. And that's what you weigh, don't worry about why your weight fluctuates. But you are right, since muscle and fat body composition takes ages to change, its certainly your hydration that is changing.

After a fast day it would be logical to weigh less and put on when you have a feast day - 166.9 is close to the average worked out by Giles, so your body is probably just settling after two extreme days. Well done with the fasting - I have tried it but get too hungry in the evenings watching the rest of the family eat, so have decided it is not for me.

Thanks both. You're right, Giles, I need to average it. I was wondering how to handle it. Claire, I keep most of my calories for the evening, as I find I'm okay in the day with small snacks. Can then have a decent meal in the evening, and don't feel hungry when I go to bed. I hoped this tactic might also help with levelling out the weight day by day, as it miight mean I would restock on glycogen and water overnight, but it seems not! Well, it's an interesting learning experience, for sure!

My weight fluctuates quite a bit day to day. It can vary as much as 4 lbs up or down. It's just a matter of hydration and glycogen level. That's just one of the things you have to get used to when you weight yourself every day. Using the averaging method that Giles used will help you keep your sanity. If the long term trend is down then you're still doing good. It's all a learning experience and gaining an understanding of your body.

Averaging daily weigh-ins over time is also Jeri's approach (I just weigh once a week, but I'm not fasting/feasting) . . . at least you're keeping this journey 'interesting' and learning things along the way!! And you seem to be adjusting well now to the fasting days? :)

Yes, I think I will have to 'take a view on' weight from now on. I'll either average, or use weight from the morning of a fast day, in other words, after a day or two of 'normal' eating. But it is interesting to see how much it can vary. 4 pounds is a lot, Herder! I guess that's because of all the exercise you do?

I only weight myself a couple of times a week, for FS on Wednesday, because the daily fluctuations can be disheartening. You are doing great! Keep to your plan and you will do this!

Mine has a basic range of about 4 pounds usually up or down 2 from my average. I don't have a digital scale, don't want one, tenths of pounds is too much stress for me.

It's funny, I think I quite like seeing the fluctuations! I know it's on a downward trend, and as long as I stick to limits and exercise a bit it will carry on that way. It's just sort of entertaining to see that it can still go up sometimes! It's only water variations, I know. Thanks for the support anyway, very much appreciated! ☺

Heidi, another popular way to fast is simply giving up two meals in the day. I.e. you eat dinner on Saturday night then don't eat any food until dinner on sunday night. Water to drink is essential in any fast. Maybe this might help. I think giles is brilliant with the average because seeing the fluctuation every day will make you insane! You are doing a great job...stop stressing about the unimportant things!

Okay, but I'm not stressing, honest! I take Jeri's point about it being fractions of a pound, though.

Definitely interesting how it changes. I weigh most days then average. The trend is what counts.
