kattay's Journal, 31 December 2014

Could have been worse :) So many birthdays, birthday dinners and holidays celebrations crammed together November and December. Obviously, I don't deprive myself. I was a little more careful about portion sizes and some foods. Too much sodium. Had too many crackers, even though they were whole wheat, they are still loaded with sodium. Didn't have any fudge, cookies, specialty breads or cheese cake. Cut back on the chocolate candies. Too bad we don't lose from the foods we don't eat!! I could gain weight by just looking at some foods! Did better than all my other years at this time. Giant step for me.

Steps for the week is 31,532 at this point. Did longer work outs with small weights this week. Trying to get most of my steps done in the mornings with a workout with the weights. The idea is to make it a habit. Working so far, at least I feel I am accomplishing something early in the day. Progress!

Have a New Year's eve dinner at my daughter's home this evening with a few friends. Looking forward to it.

Today I get to have one of my grandsons all day! Love it! His brother wanted to go hunting with his dad and this one wanted to stay with me. We are going to have fun!!

Tomorrow we are going to have the "traditional" New Year's day dinner. Beef roast, black eyed peas, cabbage. The plan is for Burgundy beef roast with potatoes, carrots, and onions. My dearest Aunt, who passed a few years back, got me into doing this each year. No pork, because would be rooting for money the whole year. Don't even season with it. No fowl or you would be scratching for money the whole year. Black eyed peas for luck, cabbage for folding money for the new year. No leftovers. Wear something new. It may hit some as silly but it is fun and it is only one day out of a year. :)

Happy New Year to all my friends and buddies on FS!! Here's to a wonderful year!!

My wife and I have a similar New Year's meal with the same thoughts for luck. You'll find no negative thoughts from me about your food intake over the last few weeks. It is was it is and YES, we do have to keep on living. Like you, I'm ready to start this new year with a refreshed attitude about healthy eating. I'll be watching YOU! <hehe> Have a safe and Happy New Year.

Don't fret over the gain, sounds like you're taking it in stride which is good. Get back to plan and the excess that is from sodium/water/carbs will come off. Enjoy your New Year dinner and the time with your grandson, I'd love to be able to get some one-on-one time with mine.

I get it,but need clarification- if you eat pig, you root for money, if you eat Chicken you scratch for money, so if you ate Beef? Or Fish? Here in Amish Country PA the traditional New Years Dinner is Pork and Kraut, (Basically you take a pork butt, throw it in a big pot, smother it with Kraut and add some potatoes later on in the process so they do not dissolve) I know Italians do seafood exclusively on New Years, not sure of the reason for this. Never heard of the beef. I wish everyone a healthy and happy new years regardless of what you consume on new years day.

Love it! Love traditions, no matter where they come from. Ginger snaps in the gravy sounds awesome, though a little quirky. My aunt was very clear on the pork or fowl. So we just went to beef. It could be any other kind of meat or go vegetarian. Guess I would rather swim for money than root for it :) We had chickens different times and pigs when we owned a farm in West Virginia when I was a kid. Chickens, turkeys, and pigs didn't care what they ate or where they ate it. :) Pigs were a bit cleaner. They would only poop in one corner of their pen and didn't eat near it. I like cooking shrimp with white wine garlic sauce for Christmas eve and New Years Eve. Not a tradition but I enjoy it. Of course, I use whole wheat pasta :)

I feel your pain, honestly!!! :) Between the holidays and other "stressful" issues going on in my life, I understand your situation!! BUT I WISH YOU a very very happy new year and know that we will do GREAT in 2015 :)

I will bear your Aunt's tradition in mind and hope that 2015 brings us all the results we desire. I don't eat mammals, so avoiding poultry will be the only issue. Thinking Crab legs, Mashed Potatoes, and Cabbage sounds like a very "White" meal for New Years, but hey we got SNOW today, so why not. (I live in Phoenix!)
