I'm back from vacation and feeling reacclimated. It was a great bonding experience for my dad and I. Seeing my mother in Vermont was lovely, but she dropped a bomb on me, admitting that she'd been diagnosed and treated for TWO separate types of cancer over a year ago. She stated that the reason she didn't tell me was that she wanted to do the BRAC1 & BRAC2 genetic testing first. She still hasn't done so due to various insurance issues and her two different physicians' reluctance to deal with a new genetic testing company. The old one that had cornered the market gets $3,000 for the test. There is no a second viable alternative that costs half as much.

Anyway, my mother is doing well and had the best treatment available. She is doing all the follow-up I could hope for and I have enough medical knowledge to feel alright about things.

My dad and I did a road trip from my mom's in Vermont down to Cape Cod. There were three wonderful days of family events and I felt enveloped in their love and caring. I plan to initiate ongoing relationships with those I only met on this trip and continue the wonderful relationships I had formed from those I'd met on previous trips.

I didn't always succeed at having healthy snacks available and as I suspected, sometimes breakfast didn't happen until 11 am or later (my dad has always had a different schedule). Despite the hurdles, though, I feel that I did fairly well and am grateful to only have gained one pound.

I hope everyone is well and I look forward to catching up on my buddies' goings-on. It's a beautiful autumn day here in the NW, so I'm off for a much-needed long walk.

So glad you had a good visit with your folks. I am from Connecticut. I haven't been back in ages. Fall is beautiful. Hope everything goes well for your mom.

I was born in CT, at Middletown Memorial Hospital, but my parents moved me to CA by the time I was 9 years old. This is only the 4th time I've gone back East since age 9. I can't seem to convince my husband to move there, but I guess I rather like living in the NW, so that's alright.
