yduj57's Journal, 04 August 2014

Been a LONG time since I journaled, or did anything more than read the emails of people's journal entries, on this site. It has been an interesting year. As in one of those Chinese curses; "may you lead an interesting life". My daughter has had some serious health issues requiring lots of caretaking. And it was her senior year of high school. She graduated, but is taking this year off to continue her journey to better health.
I managed to gain 30 pounds over that time period, and got up to 295. Turns out stress can make you gain weight like nobody's business. I was not a saint, but I also did not go crazy. An occasional indulgence, like a piece of cake, or a candy bar that was not higher than 85% cocoa. I am also extremely sensitive to carbs.
About two months ago I got religion again, and started up with JJ Virgin's diet. Borrowed the book from the library, and liked what I read about weight loss resistance, particularly in women over a certain age. It was worth a try. I had already eliminated corn, sugar, gluten, and ate very little soy, so I had to eliminate eggs, dairy, and peanuts. I was stunned to experience a dramatic reduction in pain in my IT band. I had been severely handicapped over the previous 9 months by increasing pain in my right leg, particularly along the outside of my thigh, but also shooting down my leg, and effecting my calf muscles as well. It just started to disappear. My skin had already improved quite a bit with previous changes, but I was shocked to see and feel it get even better. Who knew?
In addition to the 7 foods she suggests you eliminate, I also took out the nightshade veggies; tomatoes and peppers specifically.
When I began reintroducing the foods, eggs were connected to the pain in my leg, dairy gave me terrible gas and bloating, and tomatoes gave me severe stomach pains and the runs. Needless to say, I won't be eating any of those things any time soon.
I miss my butter coffee in the morning, but I now have a protein shake (vegan, not whey), loaded with all sorts of nutrious stuff. Not the yummiest thing in the world, but I feel good after drinking it, and it sustains me all morning. I sometimes add some ghee that I made from grass fed butter. It makes it creamier, and longer lasting.
Lunch is usually a salad with leftover protein from dinner and some nuts. Dinner is usually meat or fish, veggies, and some sort of high fiber starch such as quinoa or sweet potatoes. And I can have chocolate still. How can I complain! Actually I feel like I am eating very well. I am satisfied, and feel good.
I started an exercise program four weeks ago; Metabolic Aftershock. I learned about it on Sean Croxton's Underground Wellness podcast. I like the principles, and again, he (Jade Tada) is focused on people with weight loss resistance. And it takes about 40 minutes, three times a week. 15 minutes is super intense, but then it is done for another day or two. I can feel stronger, and have lost 8 inches since I started it. And I have lost 12 pounds since I started with JJ Virgin's plan. Feel like I am on the right path for me.
Long post, but lots to catch up on.

It sounds like we're battling a lot of the same things. I started an elimination diet today which also drops the night shades, coffee and tea. Those are rough! I'm hoping they don't end up on my permanent ban list. Good luck with your new plan. It sounds like a winner.
